Australian apple growers are set to benefit from a new export agreement that opens access to the Canadian market, removing the need for fumigation or cold treatment and preserving fruit quality. The new conditions follow several years of negotiations to demonstrate Australia’s ability to manage pests of concern to Canada without requiring expensive treatments that can damage the quality of the fruit. It is a welcome boost for an industry valued at more than $680 million, with an annual crop of close to 300,000 tonnes of fruit. This new agreement will help expand the industry’s export potential and follows the finalisation of market access for mainland apple growers to export to China earlier this year. The Australian Government has worked tirelessly to expand opportunities for the farmers and producers to export Australia's world-class products on the international stage. Australia now exports over 70 per cent of agricultural, fisheries and forestry production to over 160 markets globally – the most diversified this trade has ever been. A new research collaboration is working to transform beer by-products into innovative food and fibre products, unlocking new market opportunities for Western Australia's craft brewing industry. The Value Adding to Brewery Spent Grain project will explore how brewer's spent grain (BSG) can be turned into ready-to-eat foods, food ingredients, health products and plant-based leather. The WA Government is supporting this work through a $660,000 investment into the $1.24 million project, delivered in partnership with the End Food Waste Cooperative Research Centre. Australian brewers produce more than 300,000 tonnes of protein-rich, high-fibre BSG annually, with around 20 kilograms of wet by-product created for every 100 litres of beer brewed, most of which is destined for low-cost animal feed or landfill. Led by ChemCentre, project collaborators include Curtin University and the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development. Work will be also undertaken with industry partners including WA Brewers Association, Spinifex Brewing Co, Nanollose and Maalinup Aboriginal Gallery to drive the innovations to market. The Wines of Western Australia’s inaugural Western Australian Wine Industry Sustainability Report 2025 has been released. The report sets the baseline and outlines how WA winegrowers and producers can lead through innovation and collaboration to ensure long-term economic viability. This significant milestone has been made possible through the generous funding support from Wine Australia and the collaborative partnerships established with the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development and our WA Regional Wine Associations throughout 2024-2025. The 2025-2029 Strategic Plan targets 42% emissions reduction, 75% certified producers, and 30% water savings by 2030. With 75% of our 146 Sustainable Winegrowing Australia members already certified (above the 55% national average). Regional innovations like Margaret River’s lightweight glass initiative show how good ideas scale statewide through collaborative partnerships. "Through the Wine Industry Partnership with DPIRD, our industry now has the collaborative framework and strategic support necessary to implement these initiatives effectively and deliver measurable outcomes. We look forward to continuing our collective efforts to position Western Australia as a global leader in sustainable wine production,” said Wines of WA Sustainability Program Manager Eloise Jarvis.
