Best of WA on display at Expo 2025 Osaka

The State Government has joined the Commonwealth Government as a Gold Partner of the Australia Pavilion at the World Expo 2025 in Osaka.

Australia's theme 'Chasing the Sun' provides an opportunity to promote Western Australia - the sunniest State in Australia - as a key investment and trade partner in an optimal business time zone.

WA's participation will also strengthen our relationship with Japan, our second largest trading partner, and our longstanding sister-state, Hyogo Prefecture, which will be actively involved in hosting Expo 2025 in Osaka, as part of the broader Kansai Region.

The State Government will deliver a program to attract investment and highlight our world leading innovation and capability across a number of Diversify WA priority sectors, including clean energy, primary industries, space, health and medical life sciences, tourism and creative industries.

Noongar Artist Buffie Punch and Kirrikin, a 100 per cent Aboriginal-owned social enterprise based in Western Australia, have designed the new uniform for the Australian Pavilion. The artwork reflects a deep connection to Country and culture with vibrant motifs of iconic local flora featured, including the golden wattle, banksia and eucalyptus blossoms.

Local Chef Silas Masih, Owner and Head Chef of the Pepper & Salt restaurant in Denmark, has been selected as the WA guest chef. He will be designing menus with WA produce, providing exceptional culinary experiences to VIP delegates and activating live cooking demonstrations at the Australian Pavilion.

An impressive line-up of WA artists selected by the Commonwealth will participate in the Australian Pavilion’s Cultural Program.  First Nations artists Gina Williams and Guy Ghouse will launch the WA Cultural Program with their distinct music and performances in Noongar language.

Expo 2025 opened on 12 April and will see a full 6-month program of activation run until 13 October 2025. Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is leading Australia's participation with an investment of $100 million.

Celebrating Western Australia's sustainable fisheries credentials

Western Australia's sustainable fisheries and world-leading management and science programs were in the spotlight as Sustainable Seafood Week was celebrated across the country from 7-13 April.

Sustainable Seafood Week is an annual campaign by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) highlighting the importance of sustainable fisheries so seafood can continue to be enjoyed into the future.

The MSC's accreditation standard is used to assess if a fishery is well-managed and is considered globally as the 'gold standard' in sustainability certification.

The WA Government, in partnership with the local industry, has supported WA fisheries to achieve the MSC blue tick of approval, with 11 fisheries currently certified.

The State's West Coast Rock Lobster Managed Fishery was the first fishery in the world to receive the MSC tick and was recertified for the fifth time in 2022.

The Pearl Oyster Fishery was the first gem fishery to be certified in the world in 2017 and Rare Foods Australia, which operates the world's first abalone ranch near Augusta, was certified in 2022.

The Shark Bay Prawn Fishery is currently going through the recertification process and is seeking to extend the fishery's sustainability credentials to include the crab and scallop resources.

Other MSC certified fisheries products in WA include Exmouth Gulf prawns, West Coast deep sea crab, sea cucumber, abalone, western rock octopus and Abrolhos Island saucer scallops.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development works with each of the fisheries and conducts stock assessments to ensure stocks continue to be managed in a sustainable way to support the MSC certification process.
