Symington Altano 2014 DOC Douro, Portugal
Wine of the Weekend
Symington Altano 2014 DOC Douro, Portugal

One of the best things about playing outside in the winter is that it entitles you to enjoy some ‘Aprés’ festivities. Whether you’ve been skating, hiking or skiing, relaxing with friends and family while enjoying some comforting wine and food afterwards is part of the experience. Here’s a value-driven red blend from Portugal that would be perfect for fireside enjoyment with a cheese platter.

Tasting Note: This charming red blend is medium-bodied and full of verve. You’ll find intriguing aromas of ripe dark fruit and exotic spice on the nose that opens with floral notes and hints of coffee after a few minutes in the glass. It’s seamlessly well-balanced with fine sweet tannins, mouthwatering fruitiness and a cherry-like acidity that finishes long and smooth.
Enjoy With:  Chili, roasted red meat, grilled veggie lasagna or cheese and charcuterie.
Style:  Medium-bodied fruity red wine.
Terroir / Region: The Douro River travels nearly 900 km from its source in the Spanish interior to the Atlantic Ocean. The river cuts through northern Portugal forming an impressive river valley where native Portuguese grapes like Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca and Tinta Barroca are planted on great terraced vineyards. The region produces both table wines and fortified Port.
Producer: Five generations of the Symington family, with its Scottish, English and Portuguese ancestry, have been working in the Douro since 1882. Through the current generation’s great grandmother, the family can trace its history in the Douro through 14 generations, to the mid-17th century and the very beginnings of the history of Port.
Availability:  Symington Altano DOC will be available through Vintages officially on Saturday, but check stores now as some locations will release the wine early.
