Kaya! Hello!

April 2024

🌸What's next for your ReWild garden? 🌸

As the nights and mornings get cooler, and the stunning red flowers of the Red Flowering Gum start blooming, also known as Boorn or Yorgam (Corymbia ficifolia), it's time to embrace the Noongar season of Djeran. This is the season to turn our thoughts to garden plans, preparing and having fun picking out what to plant during the rainy days of Makuru.

In April, we have the WA Tree Festival happening from 6th April to 5th May. It's a great opportunity to connect with nature, especially trees, in our city! Join guided walks, talks, art sessions, and school holiday activities all around Perth. Also, keep an eye out for local councils offering 'native plants to residents' programs - check out what your local council and community has in store in the jam-packed program!

As you plan your garden, we are planning the next stage of ReWild Perth and we'd love to hear your thoughts!

🌱 Plan your planting for the Makuru rains

Don’t be discouraged if you experienced a few plant losses over the long hot spell. Even the most experienced gardeners face losses. It's a chance to try again and gain experience. Now is an ideal time to start identifying areas of your garden to plant out once the Makuru rains arrive and decide on new plants for your collection!

Explore ReWild Perth's resources library to find Australian plants that will thrive in your garden! Filter by 'Suburb' and 'Plant' type to find for species suitable for your local soil type. Most local government have subsidies or giveaways, supported by Water Corporation's Waterwise Council Program for native plants or verge makeovers - be sure to check with your council now!

🔨Get crafty - design and build habitat structures

Maintaining trees, rock and log piles, and leaf litter in your garden provides natural shelter for a wide variety of wildlife. How about getting creative with a weekend or school holiday project to add some funky artificial habitat to your garden?! Fancy a native bee or frog hotel? A bird box? Check out the ReWild guides online to learn how to provide a home for native birds, reptiles, mammals and insects.
