IntroductionCanvas is now the exclusive Learning Management System at Duquesne! Thank you to everyone for your hard work over the last year as we made this exciting transition together. Now that the move is officially complete, it's time to look toward preparing for the fast-approaching academic year. In this issue, we'll focus on how you can ensure you're ready to engage your students through Canvas this Fall. Access Your Canvas CoursesCanvas Course Creation ProcessInstructors will not need to request Canvas course sites each semester. All officially scheduled courses will be automatically created in Canvas within 24 hours of being input into Banner. Faculty will gain access to courses for which they are the instructor of record approximately two months prior to the start of each semester. Fall 2022 Canvas Course Site AvailabilityFaculty can now access their Fall 2022 Canvas course sites. If you cannot find your course in Canvas, reach out to your department to ensure you have been added as the course's instructor of record in Banner. Complete Canvas TrainingGetting Started with CanvasEducational Technology highly recommends that all faculty complete the Getting Started with Canvas training before teaching their first course in Canvas. This training, which is offered in a variety of formats, provides faculty with an overview of Canvas functionality and focuses on how to build an effective Canvas course. Live Training SessionsLive face-to-face and webinar training sessions are led by Educational Technology Instructional Designers. The face-to-face option provides the most hands-on, real-time experience. Several live sessions are offered monthly. Self-Guided TutorialsAll faculty and staff have been enrolled in a course called Canvas Instructor Self-Guided Tutorial. While comprehensive, the self-guided tutorial is Canvas-created so is not tailored to Duquesne faculty like the workshop or webinar options. Advanced Canvas TrainingsEducational Technology also offers specialized sessions that provide faculty with a deeper dive into specific Canvas tools. This month, we are offering sessions on Canvas Quizzes and Studio, Canvas' screen capture and collaboration tool. Prepare Your Fall 2022 CourseBuild Your Canvas CoursesIf you haven't already done so, we recommend that you start building your Fall 2022 Canvas courses now. View our Building Your Canvas Course page to learn more. Update Student Help DocumentationBe sure to review your syllabi, assignment instructions, and other student documents. Take care to remove any references to Blackboard and replace them with information on Canvas. Student Course AccessStudent AccessIn order for students to be able to access your Canvas course, you must publish the course. Enrolled students will gain immediate access to your course after you have published it. Student EnrollmentStudents who are registered for a course will be automatically enrolled in the Canvas course within 24 hours of being registered through Banner. Student ParticipationStudents can begin participating in published courses two weeks prior to the start of each semester. If you publish your course sooner, students will be able to view content but not participate (i.e. submit assignments, post to the discussion, complete quizzes) until two weeks prior to the semester start. Canvas Help & RequestsCanvas HelpThe Canvas Help button can be found at the bottom left-hand side of every Canvas page. Use it to access the Canvas Course Request link, Instructor Resources page, 24-hour Canvas support, and more. Canvas Course RequestsFaculty can add users such as Co-Teachers and TAs, copy content between their own or colleagues' courses, merge multiple sections of the same course, and more. To do so select Make a Canvas course request from the Canvas Help Button. |
