Welcome to Issue 26 of Crash Towing Industry News.

Occupational authorisation

Under the Towing Services Act 2024 (the Act) crash towing businesses must be authorised to be able to operate in the crash towing industry. The Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure (DTMI) is now working to introduce authorisations for these towing businesses.

Plans to introduce occupational authorisations were initiated by the former Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety in 2020, and since the passing of the Act, DTMI has communicated with industry through educational sessions in 2024 and 2025 and consultation industry surveys in 2025.

Once the new requirements are introduced into the regulations, towing businesses must be authorised to undertake crash towing (regulated towing). Authorisations for towing workers will be introduced in a later stage.

For more information on planned and proposed aspects of towing business authorisations, visit the DTMI website. These materials reflect proposed settings and indicative implementation timing and are not final.
