The development of a Western Australian Sheep Industry Strategy: WA Roadmap to 2028 responds directly to stakeholder calls for a clear, credible pathway to guide investment and decision making as the sector transitions to the end of live sheep exports by sea from 1 May 2028. The WA Roadmap to 2028 will be launched in early June 2026.
To support this work, the WA Roadmap to 2028: Economic Analysis is now available on The Future Flock website and underpins the economic foundation for the WA Roadmap. The findings provide analysis of potential supply chain interventions which can enable sustainable flock growth and improved outcomes across the value chain.
The release of the document coincides with the opening of Round 2 of the Farm Business Transition Program. More information on this grant program is available under Transition Assistance page.

South Asia, Middle East and Africa
- For cargo into the Middle East, there continues to be increased use of land bridge options via Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) and Khor Fakkan (UAE). Reports indicate only specific cargo types are being accepted, such as dry or frozen cargo.
Australia, New Zealand and Pacific
- Qantas flights from Perth to Paris are temporarily suspended. Instead, Paris flights originate in Sydney and operate via Singapore.
- From October, Air New Zealand will offer a service from Perth to Christchurch.
Greater China and Northeast Asia
- Maersk is starting a new ocean service between Sydney, Melbourne and Shanghai in July 2026. Transit times will be 19 days Sydney-Shanghai and 15 days Melbourne-Shanghai.

The Australian government will provide $1 million over the next three years to support Casino Beef Week, which began on 23 May 2026.
The funding aims to support the long running agricultural event and regional communities connected to Australia’s beef industry.
Established in 1984, Casino Beef Week has become one of Australia’s best known agricultural events, bringing together producers, industry representatives and local communities to celebrate the beef sector.
The event highlights Australian beef production and the producers, processors and businesses involved across the industry.
The 2026 event concluded on Sunday 31 May, with the first round of funding delivered. Further support will continue through 2027 and 2028.
Events like Casino Beef Week help keep regional industries strong by bringing people together to share ideas, showcase innovation, support local businesses and celebrate the achievements of the sector.
Beef exports were worth more than $16 billion in 2024-25, a record high and a testament to the hard work across industry.
