March @ the PBC

March is jam-packed here at the PBC!

Our first Readers event last month with Richard Fidler was a sellout and a wonderful evening overall. Jason, our treasurer, was kind enough to lend his camera skills and we will upload the whole thing onto our website soon for all to watch and listen back to.

Our March Readers has just gone on sale and we have the wonderful Ashley Kalagian Blunt joining us on the night to talk with Michaela about her new book "Dark Mode" which came out on Wednesday! More on that below...

Chippie, our beloved club cat, is being elusive and our efforts to get it to the vet and get it tagged have so far proved fruitless. It is a smart cat with very sharp claws so if anyone has any suggestions, please email me ( Hayley) at events@thepbc.org.au and let me know your tips.

Our greens have been thriving in the lush warm tropical weather and we have slowly been making improvements here and there so that it stays green all year round. Though, in the way that it always goes, our roof repairs have been slightly delayed because of this and we are patiently awaiting a little less rain so things can get underway.

Our bistro has a new name! The Fiddle Leaf Bistro as it is now known has been busy making some changes behind the scenes and they have a new page on our webiste and new branding, catering options and instagram!

Check it all out here..

Pokies, Policy & Possibilities - An Evening with Tim Costello & George Catsi.

Join us in conversation at the Petersham Bowling with Rev Tim Costello and our club President, George Catsi.

The Reverend Tim Costello is the chief advocate for the Alliance for Gambling Reform, which advocates for law reform to prevent harm from poker machine gambling.

George Catsi is actively involved in our community. As President (volunteer) of our multiple award winning Petersham Bowling Club, it was he who led the team that turned around a failed club destined for the developers by removing poker machines and creating thriving art, music, and community hub, increasing turnover by over 700% in 10 years.

It’s out 1 March in Australia through Ultimo Press.

Her previous books are How to Be Australian (2020), a memoir, and My Name Is Revenge (2019), a thriller novella and collected essays which was shortlisted for the 2019 Woollahra Digital Literary Awards and was a finalist in the 2018 Carmel Bird Digital Literary Award.

‘With Dark Mode, Ashley Kalagian Blunt has turned her love of true crime and passion for suspense fiction into a fierce wake-up call of a thriller, one that looks unflinchingly at the horrors of the dark web and sheds light on the unimaginable. Riveting, tense and supremely chilling, this is an eye-opening must-read for crime fiction fans everywhere.’ - Anna Downes, author of The Shadow House

Books books books!

This month's featured book, in honour of the upcoming election, is by P.J. O'Rourke.

Titled: "Don't vote, It just encourages the bastards"

"Given the complete dominance of politics by committee brain, the wonder is that anything gets done, and the horror is that it does. "A camel is a horse designed by a committee" is a saying that couldn't be more wrong. A camel is a seeing eye dog designed by a committee and available free with government grants to the halt and the lame."

"The free market is a bathroom scale. We may not like what we see when we step on the bathroom scale, but we can't pass a law making ourselves weigh ten stone. Leftists think we can."

Trivia Tuesdays

PBC Tuesday Trivia.

  • Do you know the difference between a capybara and a caipirinha?
  • Can you tell your Reginald Dwight from your Declan McManus?
  • Can you name all the countries which use the imperial system rather than metric?
  • Do you know which literary character has been played by Elizabeth Taylor, Kirsten Dunst and Florence Pugh?

All this intellectual ephemera and more may or may not come in handy when Tuesday Night Trivia returns for 2023.

We said a sad farewell to our beloved host Graham last year but fear not, new host Iain promises to keep the questions coming thick and fast in 2023.

Fun with friends - and cash prizes. Don't forget your gold coins for the jackpot round.

Round up your team and book your table.
