The origins of ‘purple’

Did you know the word ‘purple’ traces back to an ancient Greek name for a sea snail? The word 'porphura' was used to refer to purpura mollusk, which was the source of the rare and luxurious Tyrian purple dye. It's so precious it took 12,000 snails to make just a gram! Ancient Phoenicians mastered this art, forever linking the colour with royalty and prestige.
