NEWS UPDATE7 July 2023 Publishers noteIn good news this week, leading marine industry dealer Sirocco Marine celebrated the return of their BRIG product disrupted by the sad events in the Ukraine. Forced to suspend production a year ago when shelling of the city threatened their facility and the safety of their workforce, BRIG recently returned to full manufacturing and international export. It is a very humbling story and our best wishes to Neil, Liam, and the entire Sirocco crew for a positive return to their BRIG business. Those of you that know me won’t be surprised that I am easily fascinated when I see quality statistics that tell a story. Marine Rescue in NSW have just released their data for the 22/23 financial year. In this instance it does not relate to money, but the volume of rescues over that period. They say that the service’s 3300 volunteers were involved in a record 4,567 rescue missions between 1 July 2022 and June 30 this year, up 7.5% compared to 4,251 for the previous record set in 2020/2021. The data tells a story and helps us learn for the future. The report says that “fishing was the main activity at the time of incidents over the last 12 months while mechanical failure, flat batteries and running out of fuel were most common reasons for assistance”. And from the “that’s interesting” file, Marine Business News this week came across a story (we were actually invited to the launch – unfortunately it was in Portugal), about a Solar-Charging, floating Powerdock® to suit one of their Electric Boats. Whilst not on our doorstep (yet), as an industry we should sit back and contemplate how and when this technology will be close to home and what we will need to do as businesses to adapt.
