 "The Strait of Hormuz Must Be Open," Says UAE Minister Al Hashimy in Washington

Appearing on ABC's Sunday morning news show “This Week,” UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation Reem Al Hashimy said the UAE became Iran's top target "because we are everything that they're not.” With more than 2,800 missiles and drones directed at the UAE – 90% targeting civilian infrastructure – Iran "wanted to break [our progressive] model," she said. "But they underestimated our resolve."

On the Strait of Hormuz, Minister Al Hashimy was direct: Iran has no right to weaponize an international waterway.

Her ABC appearance came days after she spoke at the Semafor World Economy event in Washington, where she reaffirmed the UAE-US partnership, including the strong economic ties: "We have already invested about a trillion dollars in the US economy, and we've committed to investing another $1.4 trillion over 10 years."

During her Washington visit, Minister Al Hashimy also met with members of Congress and the Administration, leading policy experts and humanitarian NGOs.

UAE-US Deepening Economic Ties

Writing in the New York Times, Badr Jafar, Special Envoy of the UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs for Business and Philanthropy, makes the case that the UAE-US relationship has the potential to be “the most consequential economic partnership of the coming decades.”

Across energy, technology, business and culture, UAE and US institutions are expanding their bilateral footprint – backing American innovators, creating American jobs and deepening ties across both economies. The UAE has been the top destination for American exports in the Middle East for 17 consecutive years, generating a $23.8 billion trade surplus for the US in 2025 alone.

"It is the kind of relationship that great powers spend generations trying to construct," he writes. "And it already exists."

50 days of a closed Hormuz: Almost 600 million barrels of oil blocked so far. 50 days of mounting pressure on LNG, jet fuel, fertilizer, and the essentials that the world depends on. Behind every missing barrel, bills go up for ordinary people everywhere. The global economy cannot afford more uncertainty. The Strait cannot operate under threat. And let's call payment for safe passage what it is: A protection racket. Hormuz belongs to the world. It must be returned to the world. Exactly as it was.

@UnderSecE

Minister Al Suwaidi and I chaired the first U.S.-UAE AI Acceleration Partnership Working Group. The UAE reaffirmed its $1.4 TRILLION investment in America. Speaker Johnson said it perfectly: trusted partnerships are how America wins the AI race and protects our national security. We're securing AI supply chains, setting ironclad security standards, and ensuring advanced chips flow to trusted partners—not our adversaries.

@POTUS and @SecRubio understand that AI partnerships aren't just about technology, they're about economic power and national security. The UAE gets it too. This is American AI leadership in action: building coalitions with partners who share our values and security standards and putting AMERICA FIRST! https://t.co/bIBvgCqEqt

@SecScottBessent

I met with UAE Minister of State for Financial Affairs H.E. Mohamed bin Hadi Al Hussaini to discuss ongoing economic and financial cooperation between the United States and the United Arab Emirates. We exchanged views on regional economic developments and reaffirmed our commitment to stability and strengthening our partnership on shared financial priorities. We also discussed the importance of maintaining maximum pressure against Iran.

Dr. @AnwarGargash highlighted the need for a conclusive outcome including assurances that Iran's attacks won't be repeated. UAE-US ties are only getting stronger, he said, affirming the partnership is built on decades of trust, cooperation & shared investment. https://t.co/f56Wo79e14

Congratulations to our partners at @NASA and the Canadian Space Agency on the safe return of the Artemis II crew and the success of their historic lunar flyby. The journey of lunar exploration unites our ambitions. Today, Artemis II has achieved key objectives for human spaceflight, and soon, the Emirates Lunar Mission will pursue its own objectives with Rashid Rover 2 as it prepares to land on the lunar far side.
