ABC, 123 - LETTERS & NUMBERSHello Montavilla Preschool community! Your children came back to school with excitement to see friends and teachers, and an engaged energy for learning and play. Our weeks this month were split between number and letter activities. We closed out the month with self portrait collages, the second of our four self portraits for the school year. 123We began the month focusing on numbers primarily 1-10. We used worksheets to facilitate number recognition, and did some simple snack math using Goldfish crackers. Numbers can be tricky, and I can confidently say I am impressed with the growth and focus our cohort had with this theme. We will likely return to this topic later in the summer, incorporating the additional framework of fine motor skills to help us with writing practice. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ABCTo complement our theme of numbers, we practiced letters and phonics. The sensory bin was filled with colorful rice and wooden letters, creating the imaginary play prompt of alphabet soup. One of our big art projects this month was making alphabet cards. This was a multi-step, multi-day project where kiddos were invited to paint with brushes, sponges, hands and feet on large butcher paper. This textural paper was cut into letters, which were then mounted on backgrounds decorated with crayons, markers, and watercolors. Our finished set of alphabet cards hangs in the Yellow Room, and has been a reference during snack and lunch time (usually while reciting the words of Chicka Chicka Boom Boom). ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Outdoor ConnectionsWe were blessed with sunny, dry weather this month, and it encouraged us to take more Ladybug Walks, climb to new heights in the apple tree, and look for bugs and creatures in the backyard. We now have an honorary earth worm named Mr. Stump. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Construction Paper Self PortraitsSelf portraits are my absolute favorite way to show child growth in regards to a developed understanding of self. For this round of self portraits we used painted construction paper and glue. While looking in the mirror, kiddos were asked to draw simple shapes of their various features. Teachers cut these out and facilitated kiddos gluing and pasting their eyes, ears, mouth, and nose. Each child's portrait is filled with such character and life! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() February CurriculumOur theme for February is The Pacific Northwest. This place-based theme invites us to learn about the many magical aspects of our environment. We will be using observation skills to help develop an understanding of what makes our environment and community so special and unique. Each week we will focus on a different feature of the Pacific Northwest - trees, mountains, bridges, water, and rivers. There will a lot of cool art projects and STEM concepts interwoven into this curriculum. I am really looking forward to this one :) With love and gratitude, Teacher Maura and Teacher Bodhi |
