It's the first time Perth has ever hosted an event of this kind, and it kicked off with a record attendance of more than 1800 delegates – including from China, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Over the next two days the Perth Convention Centre will become a thriving innovation hub. AgriFutures evokeAG. 2024 will feature keynote speeches from some of the best minds in agriculture, on topics such as sustainability, productivity, food security, and renewable energy. It will also provide an unprecedented opportunity for the state's food and agriculture sector startups to connect with potential international investors. WA startups will showcase their innovations – from environmentally-friendly alternatives to plastic, through to new ways of producing bioenergy, and revolutionary biosensor technology for animal healthcare. WA researcher and developer Guy Coleman, who is behind the 'Open Weed Locator' project, which is helping farmers access open-source technology to develop DIY weed detectors, will feature as one of evokeAG. 2024's Future Young Leaders. In addition, WA will host a packed schedule of 35 specialty events during the week of AgriFutures evokeAG. 2024. More... The WA Government has invested $12.2 million into the establishment of the Sustainable, Innovative Food Technologies (SIFT) Centre located within the Food Innovation Precinct of WA in the Peel Business Park at Nambeelup. Funded through the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, and operated by the Future Food Systems Co-operative Research Centre and Murdoch University, the facility is fitted out with the latest in food and beverage manufacturing equipment including a high-pressure processing unit – which is one of only two in the State – used to cold pasteurise foods. The unit will help extend the shelf life of products while preserving natural nutrition and flavour. The SIFT Centre is open to all WA food and beverage businesses that are seeking a low-risk environment to scale up production by offering common use of manufacturing equipment at a subsidised rate. Source and Image: Austrade Adjusting nitrogen fertiliser applications on grain crops can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and boost profitability, according to detailed analysis led by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD). Researchers investigated changes in farm business profitability and emissions from different nitrogen and liming strategies using bio-economic modelling simulation across 14 Western Australian grainbelt locations. The findings will be presented by DPIRD research scientist Sud Kharel at the 2024 GRDC Grains Research Update in Perth later this month. “Simulations using the Economic Valuation of Alternative Land Use Sequence (EVALUS) model were conducted for sites across the grainbelt in 2023,” Mr Kharel said. “Adjusting nitrogen applications during the season led to increased gross margins and reduced emissions in all study locations, particularly in higher rainfall locations. “Modelling of nitrogen application strategies aimed at maximising profit, rather than yield, always resulted in lower greenhouse gas emissions.” However, the analysis found neglecting lime applications to reduce emissions would likely reduce farm profit.
