Issue 807 Thursday, 30 May, 2024
On Sunday, we welcomed the major announcement that China Southern Airlines will resume its non-stop service between Guangzhou and Perth later this year. Proudly supported by Tourism WA, in partnership with Perth Airport, the service will operate three times per week, bringing an additional 41,000 inbound seats to Western Australia annually, and further strengthening Perth’s reputation as the nation’s Western Gateway. China was WA's largest market for visitor spend pre-pandemic, with 73,000 Chinese visitors injecting a huge $367 million into
the WA economy in 2019. Guangzhou is the 20th international destination connected to Perth with new or resumed non-stop flights since borders reopened and marks a massive aviation milestone for our state. Speaking of milestones, this week we were thrilled to announce that son of Australian legend Steve Irwin and beloved Australian environmentalist Robert Irwin is the first confirmed speaker to address the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) Global Summit, which is proudly supported by Tourism WA. We look forward to warmly welcoming Robert in October and announcing more exciting speakers soon. This week we also reflect as part of National Reconciliation
Week, which this year is themed ‘Now More Than Ever’. Tourism WA has placed Aboriginal tourism at the heart of the WA Visitor Economy Strategy 2033, and last week we were delighted to continue this commitment by supporting nine trade-ready Aboriginal tourism operators to attend ATE24 in Melbourne, which came shortly after we supported the launch of the seventh Camping with Custodians campground at Lombadina on the stunning Dampier Peninsula. The tourism industry is in a unique position to support reconciliation, and at Tourism WA, we are dedicated to supporting the growth of Aboriginal tourism.
We are proud to work closely with the WA Indigenous Tourism Operators Council (WAITOC) and Aboriginal business operators across the state, to support Aboriginal people to share and preserve culture on Country through tourism experiences.
Warm regards,
