What's Happening at Doe Bay?

Notes from Joe

Dear Friends of Doe Bay,

First things first.... Get your calendars right now and pick a week to come to Doe Bay this summer to enjoy the music of your choice.  Check out the list below.  And we are not done.  We will be updating it over the next month.  Don't put it off, pick a time right now.  I will see you there.

JOE (at Doe Bay dot com)

Post-script - Watch for my ideas at various spots below in this missive. I have a lot of them. Some are good, some bad.  But sadly, I can't tell the difference.  That is your job.

Visual Artist Clint Woods - A Recent Artist in Residence

Thank you Clint Woods for coming up for an Artist Residency and leaving behind so many gems.  Clint painted the beautiful Doe Bay landscape on the masthead of this newsletter above, as well as these incredible pieces.  We will have some of his work on display around the property.

Hello, Goodbye  & Hello Again

Molly
Jamie Salinas

I used to freak out when favorite Doe Bay staff told us they were leaving.  After about ten years, instead of crying and saying goodbye, I just say, "See you later!"  Most of the really great ones come back.  Welcome back to Molly and Jamie; two favorites!  Please say hi to them in the Doe Bay Cafe this summer!

Tos

Our community lost a friend last week, Tos Fackenthall.  Some of the greatest Doe Bay Fest moments live on because Tos made them permanent through his photographs.  Tos shared his last month with so many of us, culminating in a gathering on April 16th at the Abbey in Fremont.  It was a celebration, a wake and a homecoming and Tos wasn't about to miss it.  He left us less than 48 hours later.  Here is my eulogy for my friend:

Tos documented OUR Doe Bay Fest Journey and then took us with him on HIS incredible Final Journey. Thank you Tos, for sharing, for teaching and for preserving our memories! And especially for staying around long enough to let us tell you of your impact.

JOE IDEA - Bocce Ball at Doe Bay... let me know if you would like that.  Pickleball is also being discussed.  Joe@DoeBay.com

Tulips - Doe Bay

The LaConner of East Orcas - We feel so bad for those folks who drove to LaConner, saw a couple flowers and were back to Seattle. They were so close; just a ferry ride to Orcas and a short drive to the farthest point on the island.  And there, they could have seen ... DOE BAY TULIPS IN BLOOM

  • Probable Bad Joe Doe Bay Fest IDEA that never happened. (Saved by the Pandemic.) Doe Bay Fest 15 - No guitars allowed... After about DBF 8, I got the idea that guitars had become a western music cliche'...  and I wanted horns.  What do you think? Joe@DoeBay.com

Salish Sea Folk Arts Fest

We love to support cool happenings on Orcas Island and the Salish Sea Folk Arts Fest is no exception. This new event is co-sponsored by the San Juan Islands Makers Guild, Washington State Parks Folk and Traditional Arts, Heritage Ranch, and Orcas Wonder Camp.

Special Doe Bay lodging offer - 25% off 3 or more nights between May 15-20.  Promo Code: FOLK

This small, welcoming community gathering is limited to 150 participants. Excellent teachers, beautiful forest and lake location, and heritage skill-sharing.

  • JOE IDEA - Comedy at Doe Bay - I waste many hours watching (largely against my will) comedians on Tik Tok and IG and FB.  It seems like we ought to be able to do it at Doe Bay.  But how?  Comedy night?  A comedy workshop?  Improv?  I am pretty sure it needs alcohol. I think this will work. By way of reference, I always wanted to do Literature at Doe Bay. We tried and failed a few times....Poetry slams, etc., but then we found WRITE DOE BAY which has been a huge hit. Joe@DoeBay.com

Flying to Doe Bay is a treat.  But sometimes in Winter, there is some turbulence!!    >>>>

Music at Write Doe Bay
Joe - Write Doe Bay

Write Doe Bay - the 20th episode just happened at Doe Bay April 6 to 9.  Jenn Furber has really come into her own, making the experience incredible.  Music has continued to be a big part of this Writer's workshop because... well, because it is Doe Bay.

My old and dear friend, Jacob Miller was back and his talent resume now includes teacher.  As I said to Jacob, "Even if you didn't have such a beautiful voice and write such magical songs, everyone would want you in their band because of your guitar playing!"

Chase Anderson, the harp-playing photographer or the photographing harpist, surprised everyone.  Caitlin Jemma (a new friend) and Garrett Lamp (an old friend) made fun music and shared so many thoughts.

I got to tell some stories, recite some poetry and got to know some wonderful people.

Write Doe Bay 21 is in October.  Write Doe Bay - A Pacific Northwest Writing Retreat on Orcas Island, WA

You should really plan on attending!

  • JOE IDEA - Banter Camp for Professional Musicians - You may be thinking that this is a solution in search of a problem. But years of observation have confirmed that there is a wide variety of Banter Talent, and it seems highly unrelated (and may even be inversely related) to musical talent. I think it is something you could learn. So maybe a workshop for working musicians only.... those who have the opportunity or are expected to address the listeners. Footnote - (In case you don't know what I mean by "banter", Banter is to a musical performance, what Dicta is to a Supreme Court decision.) Do you qualify to participate, and would you come if we put one on?  Let me know. Joe@DoeBay.com

Bloom TV  & Imagine

Two things happened at Doe Bay in Early September 2023…Imagine Festival and Bloom.

The latter is a reality TV show which we squeezed into the festival.  The team built an art and flowers installation on the beach at Doe Bay.  It was typical Doe Bay and typical Imagine…each of the vegetables were made into electronic instruments that played sounds of the Salish sea when touched…You are invited to watch the Doe Bay / Imagine / Orcas Island episode of Bloom using this 30 day free trial link.. the episode premiers on May 2nd.

And don’t forget that Imagine tickets are now on sale and it will sell out…. I hope to see you here on  September 6, 2024!!

Help of sorts, Wanted...

Two things.

1.) We are always open to and in need of people who feel like camping and working a bit at Doe Bay.

2.) Also, this summer we will have film and video artists on the property in early June and late July.  We are looking for some on island talent that might help us with a video/film project that we haven't fully designed yet.

Goodbye... I mean, See You Later!.....  Better yet, Welcome back..... Kotter!

(too cute?  Yeah,  cheezy? Yah... Noted.  JOE
