A message from the Chief Executive

Hi Colleagues!

All settled in and on a learning and teaching roll? Whatever and whoever you learn, lead and teach with, we hope it's been a fantastic start to your learning year.

This is the first Newsletter for the term and it has lots of info about learning opportunities and ideas to get your Association minds thinking. Our "Professional Learning for Associations" opportunities kick off in Week 6 and are designed to provide learning conversations for the different "roles" within your Association Boards and Committees. Check them out and make sure your team members know how to get involved.

It's obviously a busy time out there in Association land, judging by the large number of our Member Associations who are reaching out for support with event management and marketing. Keep those requests coming - we LOVE supporting you! Our strength is our collaborative community. Together we are better! We look forward to connecting soon.

Association News

Look what our Member Associations have been up to!

SASTA, PDA and HAA were three of the successful applicants for "PL Grants Funding in 2024". Check out their success stories by watching their short videos at this link.

SO many great ideas and learnings - thanks to these Associations for helping all of us grow and for contributing to the learning life of educators across the State!

NOTE: The PL Grants Process for 2025 is currently underway. Many thanks to all those Associations who applied!

Learning with and from each other

At our recent EdSA Advisory Council Meeting, Councillors collaborated to explore Question 14 from our EdSA Membership Renewal Survey. This question focussed on "membership categories" and it provided lots of amazing ideas as everyone explored the different categories our 63 Member Associations choose to have. "Country Membership" as a category sparked lots of interest, with several Associations looking to now include this in the future. How cool - learning from each other's successes!

HOT TOPIC - Another hot topic of conversation at the Council were the range of strategies Associations are using to segment their professional learning to address the differing curriculum approaches across systems and sectors. This remains a key topic for continued conversation in the coming months! Some of the successful actions Association have already taken to support Dept members to engage in the SA Curriculum for Public Education include:

  • Exploring pedagogical implementation of the curriculum
  • Supporting early career teachers and building capacity across associations
  • Cross-sector collaboration in sharing curriculum resource
  • Information sessions for leaders during holiday periods
  • Developing ‘cheat sheets’ for easier curriculum understanding
  • Future professional learning (PL) planned in consultation with SA English Literacy
  • Featuring expert voice Louise Dempsey to align with SA curriculum needs.
  • Upcoming workshop at the DSA conference
  • Conducted sessions at Primary, Secondary, and State conferences in 2024 with DfE-led sessions.

Getting to know the EdSA Board

At our Advisory Council, Councillors indicated they would like to know more about our Board Members. You asked, so we are delivering! Meet two of our Board Members in today's Newsletter.

Karen Butler Board Director - EdTechSA President

Hi, I’m Karen!
I’m passionate about education, especially lifting women in STEM and supporting early career teachers. One of my most cherished memories is receiving a simple yet heartfelt gift from a student in need—it reminded me why I love teaching.

I’m also a proud foster carer; my journey to motherhood was unexpected but incredibly rewarding. Professionally, I’ve embraced digital technologies and governance, learning so much through Educators SA. In my downtime, I love a good book, beach days on the Yorke Peninsula, and boogie boarding at Berry Bay. Being part of Association Land keeps me inspired every day!

Ana Marques Britto Board Director - MASA Association

Hello! I'm Ana Lucia Marques Britto, a passionate educator who loves seeing that "aha!" moment in my students' eyes. My own learning journey took a big turn when a conversation with my mum (a Maths teacher) completely changed the way I understood Mathematics!

I have a Master’s in Science and degrees in Biology and Pedagogy, and I’m also the Vice President of the Brazilian Association of South Australia. I love connecting with like-minded people, always learning, and reflecting on my teaching. When I’m not in the classroom, you’ll find me out with friends, reading, or watching movies. Being on the Board allows me to see the big picture and contribute to education in South Australia—because learning never stops!
