Message from the President
An eventful first fortnight in the job

Two weeks ago this evening, I was proudly being confirmed as the new President of the AMA (WA).

I knew there were a number of immediate challenges ahead but having taken part in the amazing success of MEDCON21, including the phenomenal Gala Ball, you might have forgiven me for thinking I'd have at least a few days to settle in.

Milestone VAD option commences

As of yesterday, an eligible adult will now be able to access voluntary assisted dying (VAD) as part of their end-of-life choice options.

It has been a long 18 months for the Department, since the Voluntary Assisted Dying Act 2019 (WA) was passed by Parliament, and it has now launched a comprehensive and easily accessible library of resources to assist practitioners and the community.

These resources provide practitioners an in-depth understanding of the process and their obligations in responding to a First Request for VAD, as well as provide information to those suffering a terminal disease or illness, whose end will be intolerable.

AMA (WA) Benevolent Fund

The perception that anyone working in the medical profession is likely to be financially secure is not always true. The AMA (WA) Benevolent Fund was established many years ago so that members and their families could have the benefit of added financial support in times of need.

The fund has come to the aid of several families since being established and provided much-needed financial security during very difficult times. It could happen to anyone at any time.

Make a contribution to the AMA (WA) Benevolent Fund to ensure we are in a position to help. All contributions are tax deductible.
