Industry Trends from Steve Nugent

Steve Nugent, our Director of Business Development, will be giving a presentation at the Sosland Purchasing Seminar on June 4-6 in Kansas City MO.  He will be outlining market conditions and trends in the fruit industry, from what MicroDried has seen the past few years to projected forecasts. A few key points: a global slowdown is affecting pricing, imports are having a larger impact on the markets particularly berries, frozen inventories are higher than a year ago, crop sizes are stable to increasing, and consumer demand will be strong as fruit offerings grow.

Breakdown of Fruits

  • Apple – 2023 is potentially the biggest crop in last 5 years; fresh demand remains good; IQF pricing may soften
  • Peach – low carry-in inventory, crop size seems to be similar to 2022; pricing should be stable over 2022 which is higher than 5 year average
  • Red Tart Cherry – inventories are good; 2023 crop looks average; pricing is down from 2022
  • Cranberry – inventories are tight but pricing likely to decrease with average/large crop
  • Cultivated Blueberries – overall demand continues to increase; 2023 crop is looking good in Pacific NW and Midwest while the south has experienced some damage; IQF Pricing should be softer than 2022
  • Strawberries – acreage is up from 2022; inventories are low yet 2023 pricing is projected to decline slightly
  • Raspberries – some carry-in inventory available; 2023 crop projected to be good; decreased pricing is expected yet pricing is still high based on historical average
  • Pineapple – inventory is good and crop expected to be flat; pricing also flat to slightly down
  • Mango – fresh demand has increased; inventory is available and 2023 should have stable pricing to slight decrease
