MARINE BUSINESS NEWS UPDATE

NEWS UPDATE

8 July 2022

Publishers note

Occasionally a story hits the news that gets a lot of interest.

Everyone will remember that day in 2007 when the Pasha Bulker, a 76,000-tonne bulk carrier was stranded off Newcastle as Australia was lashed by five east coast lows. With the consequences being that a big boat ended up on Nobbys Beach for 25 days. It made world news.

Whilst the events of this week were not as dire, the potential for disaster certainly was. As the MV Portland Bay, a 170-metre vessel lost all power very close to the southern beaches off Sydney. It all started Monday, and for the next three days, a myriad of agencies did their part to avoid a disaster. Whilst the vessel did not hold any cargo, reports were that it had substantial amount of fuel on board.

Helicopters played their part, as did a number of tugs, one referred to as a Emergency Tow Vessel (ETV), and to top it off many many gutsy people in awful weather and equally challenging seas. In no way am I undermining the work of all those on the shore who also contributed to the efforts.

Marine Business News tried to capture as much of the story each day as it developed. Read the full story, as well as view our 9 minute video showing some of the vision over the 3 days.  It was a fascinating event.

And in late breaking news, The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has detained the MV Portland Bay currently berthed in Port Botany. This follows AMSA’s legal direction to the vessel to move to port and the successful towing operation conducted by both AMSA and NSW Port Authority commissioned tugs.
