Hopeless
How the voluntary sector can give hope where there was none

On 5 June 2009 Rt Hon Iain Duncan Smith MP spoke to a well attended 'Charities Parliament' led by Faithworks. Iain Duncan Smith, Chairman of the CSJ, spoke on the importance of the voluntary sector in mending 'Broken Britain'.

Iain spoke to an audience of charity workers and poverty fighters, some of whom have been life long practitioners in the voluntary sector. Introducing the work of the CSJ as different to the usual Westminster think tank, he said, "we get along side small, grassroots charities... solving the issues in communities by people in those communities." BROWN WATCH/CAMERON WATCH
Our latest Brown Watch puts the number of Breakthrough Britain policies adopted by HM Government at 18 with the most recent being the climb down over the building of five Titan prisons, recommended in our Prison Reform Report Locked Up Potential.

Meanwhile HM Opposition have adopted 67 CSJ policies with the most recently announced on social housing as in our Housing Poverty report.

 

 

FIELD CALLS 2ND EDITION OF 'EARLY INTERVENTION' "THE MOST IMPORTANT REPORT PRODUCED IN PARLIAMENT" IN 30 YEARS
The CSJ published a second edition of its Early Intervention report this month. Labour MP Frank Field describes the report, co-authored by Rt Hon Iain Duncan Smith MP and Graham Allen MP, as ""the most important report, official or unofficial, produced in Parliament since I became a Member 30 years ago."

"Early Intervention: Good Parents. Great Kids. Better Citizens", co-produced with the Smith Institute, received endorsements from Gordon Brown, David Cameron and Nick Clegg when it was first published in September 2008.

 

CSJ AWARDS 2009 WINNERS SELECTED
The CSJ Awards 2009 Judging Panel met last month to decide this year's winning entries. Over 350 organisations from across the UK applied for a chance to win a £10,000 prize from a £50,000 prize pot. The final shortlist were presented to Camila Batmanghelidjh (Kids Company), Reverend Luke Geoghegan, Bob Holman, Rt Hon Theresa May MP (Shadow Cabinet Member, pictured), Tim Campbell (Entrepreneur & winner of the Apprentice 2005), Tris Lumley (Senior Analyst, New Philanthropy Capital). The Winning groups will be announced at the CSJ Awards on 1 July 2009.
