NOW REPRESENTING CHLOE WEST

Harper’s is thrilled to announce the representation of St. Louis-based artist Chloe West. West’s first solo exhibition, Out of Cheyenne, took place at Harper’s Apartment in September 2022. Her work will be featured in Ripe, opening this Wednesday, February 15, at Harper's Los Angeles.

Building on techniques pioneered by 17th-century Flemish and Dutch oil painting, West creates vivid self-portraits that exalt the sensuous qualities of the female nude. Her compositions focus on specific regions of the body in sepia and cyan hues, accentuating the rich complexion of the skin's surface. Curves, wrinkles, and veins are rendered with precision while West's nimble adoption of chiaroscuro adds layers of drama and beauty to these detailed features. She often situates her figures in arid landscapes inspired by the deserts in Wyoming—the artist's childhood home—as they engage with natural elements such as bones, plant life, rocks, and shells. Combining personal motifs with conventions from Western art history, West's intimate portraits generate a paradoxical sense of timelessness through their mortal subject matter.

Chloe West (b. 1993, Cheyenne, WY) received a BFA from the University of Wyoming in 2015, and an MFA from Washington University in 2017. She is the recipient of the 2021 Creative Stimulus Award from Critical Mass for the Visual Arts. Most recently, West’s work has been exhibited at Harper’s, Los Angeles and New York (2023 and 2022); Artgenève, Geneva (2023); Galerie Mighela Shama, Geneva (2022); Morgan Presents, New York (2022); PM/AM, online (2021); UNIT, London (2021); No Place, Columbus (2021); Pressure Club & Fjord, Philadelphia (2021); projects+gallery, St. Louis (2021); and PRACTISE, Chicago (2019). West will participate in forthcoming group exhibitions at Parker Gallery, New York, and Harper’s East Hampton in 2023. Her work has appeared in publications such as ArtMaze Magazine, Booooooom, and Silver Space. West currently lives and works in St. Louis.
