Award: Hangama Amiri (BFA 2012) is one of only six artists shortlisted for Canada's top artistic honour, the Sobey Art Award! She works predominantly in textiles, examining notions of home, and how gender, social norms, and geopolitical conflict affect the daily lives of women in Afghanistan and the diaspora. Award: Congratulations to Naqsh 
Sagar (BFA 2021, Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Design 2022)
, designer at Wunder, and her partner Rebecca Benjamin of Ray Creative Agency, for winning bronze in the Print category at the Young Lions Competition. Winners are sent to the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity in France from June 16 – 20, 2025 to compete on the world stage. They received the award for Stretch your Mind a project for the Baycrest Foundation that focused on the importance of physical activity to promote brain health and help reduce dementia risks.

Award: Claire MacDonald (BFA 2011) has been shortlisted for the Excellence in Fine Craft Award through the Visual Artists Newfoundland & Labrador - CARFAC. In 2022, Claire moved to Bonavista, NL where she opened a studio and shop called Kind Seas. Her designs are characterized by a mix of organic forms, soft, graceful lines, and rugged rock-like textures of the coastal landscapes of Newfoundland. Read more.

 

Award: Congrats to set designer Tom Anthes (ANSCAD 1967) on receiving Screen Nova Scotia's 2025 Film Crew Excellence Award. Tom started his career with CBC in 1967, designing virtually every east coast CBC production. He is currently the set designer for This Hour Has 22 Minutes. Known as a master of his craft and a generous teacher and mentor, Tom's talent and love of the industry shine through in his vast body of work. After a career spanning six decades, Tom retired this year. Read more.

 
 
 
 

Award: Adam Taylor O'Reilly (BFA 2007), Director of Graphic Design and Brand Creative for the Brooklyn Museum, recently won a Type Directors Club 71 award in 
Communication Design. The Type Directors Club is the leading international organization supporting excellence in typography. He received the award for his work in partnership with design company 
Other Means, to design a new visual identity for the museum. Read more.

 

Artist-in-Residence: Duane Jones (BDes Honours 2004) was recently selected as the Artist-In-Residence for Pavia Gallery. The award-winning conceptual artist, designer, and podcast host is fascinated by how visual language is used to shift culture and change or reinforce prevailing beliefs. Duane will be at the gallery until the beginning of August working in the space located just in front of PAVIA. 995 Herring Cove Road, Herring Cove, NS. Read more.

 

Public Art Projects: Congratulations to the artists selected for Halifax's Cogswell District Redevelopment Project as a part of the InterCHANGE public art program. Participating artists include: Zeta Paul (2018-2020), Letitia Fraser (BFA 2019), 
Carmahn McCalla, Lou Sheppard (BFA 2006) and Daramfon Morgan. They will create artwork to ground and animate these high profile public spaces in downtown Halifax.

Fellowship: Ray Cronin (BFA 1987) will be honoured as the 2025 New Brunswick College of Craft & Design Fellow at this year’s convocation! Cronin’s contributions as a writer and  as curator of Canadian Art at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, continue to enrich the arts landscape of New Brunswick and beyond. Read more.

 

In the News: The Black Cultural Centre for Nova Scotia recently unveiled a new exhibit honouring William Hall, the first Black person, first Nova Scotian, and one of the first Canadians, to receive Britain's highest award for bravery, the Victoria Cross. A design team connected with NSCAD including: John deWolf  (BFA 1992/instructor), Robert Currie (instructor), Thomas Miko (BDes 1993) and Maggie Abbott (BDes 2024), was behind the new exhibit.  Read more.

 

In the News: ‘Eat-local’ advocate Emily Lawrence (BFA 2017) has thoughts on buying Canadian, food snobs and shopping at Costco. She shares her perspectives on the local food movement in Nova Scotia and her work with Farmers' Markets of Nova Scotia in this Globe and Mail article. Read more.

 

Exhibition: Contexture II, a solo exhibition by artist Julie Rosvall (2012-2019, Certificate in Gallery and Studio Management 2023) draws inspiration from the texture and tactile nature of her work and the word 'contexture' itself, “linked together to form a connected whole.” The exhibition is an invitation to explore and reflect, not just on the final image, but the slow process of textile and printmaking itself. Opening reception: June 21, 2 p.m. Runs until Aug. 22. Acadia University Art Gallery, 10 Highland Ave., Wolfville, NS. Read more.

 
 

Exhibition: Meeting in the Shallows, an exhibition of drawings, prints and alternative photographic techniques by Natalie Goulet (MFA 2022) and Carrie Phillips Kieser (MFA 2022) depicts Atlantic coastal habitats in a palette of blues. Exhibition: ELBOWS UP! is a group art exhibition that reflects upon Canada’s unique culture, diversity, and strength. The expression 'elbows up' comes from hockey and has been a rallying cry for Canadians in recent months. The exhibition features work by Chris Andrews (BFA 2003), Anna Bald, Bruce Mackinnon (BFA 1975, DFA 2013), Douglas Bamford (BFA 1995), Wayne Boucher (BFA 1975), Lorne Bouchard, Elise Campbell, Gracia Isabel Gómez Cantoya (MFA 2025), Karen Chase, Donald H. Curley, Shannon Donovan (BFA 2018), Terry and Stephen Drahos, Hannah Epstein, Rebecca Fisk (BFA 1993), John Harker, Stef Hurley (VAC 2025), Ann Kenny, Mylene Lehoux, Mary Jane Lundy (BFA 2003), Ann Marie MacLean, Shauna MacLeod (BFA 2011), Alison Mitchell, Wilfred P. Exhibition: Join Craft NB and Parks Canada artists-in-residence as they showcase work inspired by their time in Fundy National Park. The exhibition is called Beneath the Surface and includes Jen Pilon (2006-2007). Craft NB Executive Director, Christina Foster says the exhibition will reach roughly 350,000 park visitors over the summer. Opens June 28, 1-4 p.m. Pollinator Garden, Fundy National Park, Alma, NB. Read more.

 

Exhibition: Répondez s’il vous plaît: RSVP reflects on the entangled histories of capitalism, colonialism, sexual identities, and diasporic embodiment. Participating artists include: Chipo Chipaziwa, Andy Fabo, Georgia Fambris, Sameer Farooq, Kyriaki Goni, Maureen Gruben, Julius Manapul, Eva Papamargariti, Nicolas Sassoon, Ezzo Scourti, Lou Sheppard (BFA 2006), Evann Siebens, Chrysanne Stathacos, Theo Triantafillidis, Chukwudubem Ukaigwe, Marina Velisioti, Iria Vrettou, and Meichen Waxer​. Exhibition: Visual Arts Nova Scotia's mentorship program exhibition 
Mented highlights the talents of emerging artists Solmaz Asheri (BFA/BA 2017), Elise Campbell, Jools Annie (Julia Hutt), and Adam McNamara. The exhibition also features their mentors François Gaudet, Barbara Lounder (MFA 1984, Professor Emerita), Jessica Winton (BFA 1997, MFA 2017, Faculty), and Andrew Maize (BFA 2011). Exhibition: Through the Fog, is an exhibition of abstract landscape paintings by Kristina Sobstad (BFA 2010).  In describing her work, she says, "I translate memory—sensory, autobiographical, emotional, muscle—into physical form on canvas using expressive brush strokes and gestural, but thoughtful and deliberate, mark making. I seek to embody movement in my work by synthesizing sound, form, and colour, resulting in unexpected juxtapositions."Runs until July 5. Katzman Art Projects, 5431

Exhibition: Mercury and The Hyacinth, a collective expression of queer artists, is described as a timely display with consideration to the current mercurial global political climate. Curated by Lee Cripps, the exhibition features works by: Brandt Eisner (BFA 2005), 
Claudia Legg (BFA 2015), Lucas Morneau, Drew Quon (BDes 2000), and Cyd Sparrow (2020). Runs until July 19. ARTSPLACE 396 St. George St. Annapolis Royal, NS.

Exhibition: The Red Pony and Friends, paintings by Wayne Boucher (BFA 1975). Boucher has used the Red Pony as an emblem since its debut in a painting with the same name in 1983. "I really don’t know why I used the Red Pony in an abstract painting," notes Wayne. They became significant counterpoints and created a dynamic opposition in his mostly abstract works. Runs until July 19.

Exhibition: In her exhibition 
Amended, textile artist and printmaker Julie Rosvall ( 2012-2019, Certificate in Gallery and Studio Management 2023)  explores themes of resilience, memory, health, and mobility challenges. Combining soft ground etching, textile reliefs, and visibly mended garments, this deeply personal manifestation of the artist's lived experiences invites visitors to connect damage with transformation.

Exhibition: From One to Many Natures features works from the AGNS's permanent collection and the Nova Scotia Art Bank that explore our profound connection to nature. The exhibition includes works by: Steve Farmer (BFA 1989/Faculty) photo right, Ned Bear (1998 - 2001), Carrie Allison (BFA/BA 2014, MFA 2018), David Askevold (Retired), Jordan Bennett (Faculty), Alvin Comiter (Retired), Gerald Ferguson (Professor Emeritus), Katherine Knight (BFA 1980), Anne Macmillan (BFA 2009) and Lucy Pullen (BFA 1994). Through a range of perspectives, these works look to expand understandings and spark meaningful conversations about our relationships with each other and the world around us. Workshop: Knobs -The Punctuation of Pottery with Tim Worthington (MFA 1977). Learn to make a treasure jar for beach glass, a favourite stone from a walk or any other summer treasure that deserves a nice clay container. 
Attention will also be given to the design and decoration of the lid of the jar, as this contributes so much to the character of the finished piece.

Exhibition: Mi’kmaw Tepgunsejig features the dynamic print series 13 Moons by Jordan Bennett (Faculty). Working at the confluence of contemporary and tradition, Bennett’s artistic practice is largely informed by place and heritage, and his signature style brings incredible colour and form to his two-dimensional work inspired by traditional Mi’kmaq quillwork. Exhibition: NSCAD faculty member and jeweller Kye Yeon Son is among the artists exhibiting their work in GOLD. The exhibition features work with gold used as a pure metal, applied as the thinnest leaf, as a metallic lustre glaze or spun into narratives through a golden thread.
