Feature storyLast year the Class of 1971 visited our College as part of their 50 year celebrations. The former students were guests at our College Assembly and enjoyed a tour of the College including their old stomping ground 'B Block'. They also participated in an engaging Q&A session with some of our Year 7 students followed by a morning tea cooked and served by our hospitality students. We are delighted we could share this momentous milestone with the Class of 1971. It was incredibly heart warming to see the strength in their friendships 50 years on. Commentary by Class of 1971 by Vern Ferdinands and Michael Maher. The graduating Class of 1971, most of whom commenced with De La Salle in grade four (1965, God Bless Mrs Howell and Mrs Waller) are pleased to be part of the first La Salle Alumni newsletter. As a group we celebrated our 50th Anniversary in 2021 and to mark the occasion we attended four special events across the the year. 16 February 2021: De La Salle Belly Hoo Day lunch at Lou Muriale’s function Centre in the Valley. 4 August 2021 Welcomed back to La Salle event followed by a Long Lunch at the Woodbridge Hotel. 11 September 2021 De La Salle Class of 1971 School Reunion dinner at the Mandoon Estate. So how did we get to be at La Salle all those years ago? Well, our parents had come through the Second World War (many of whom arrived in Australia as refugees from the conflict in Europe) and were part of the new era of post war development and growth for Australia. For Midland this meant hundreds of workers required for the Midland Railways Workshop and a host of small business opportunities for the supply of fresh produce such as meat, fruit and veggies and dairy just to name a few. The theme back then was God, King and Country so it was no surprise that we were attending a Catholic Boys School. Today as many of us have retired or reduced our daily workload, we have time to reflect on the ‘good old days we shared at school’ and recall many sporting events from our time together and still dispute, just who did kick that winning goal and who was robbed of fairest and best on the footy field that year. One thing is for sure we cherish our time together and wish the Alumni well for the future. Celebrating success and service Congratulations to Jesse Schelfhout (Class of 2016) who has been awarded the 2022 Rhodes Scholarship. Jesse will start at Oxford University this year and is planning to study a Doctor of Philosophy in Physics. Your former teachers and our College community are incredibly proud and wish you all the best for the future. Watch this video to discover more about Jesse's exciting opportunity."La Salle is like a home away from home,” Peter Elloy. In December 2021, the College marked Peter's 50 years of service at La Salle College Middle Swan with a Mass and special function with his family, friends and current and former colleagues. Peter Elloy has made an enormous contribution to our school community and Catholic education in Western Australia. His legacy and connection to La Salle College will always be part of our rich history and forever etched in the hearts, minds and lives of the students, families and staff that are blessed to know him. We wish Peter all the best as he embarks on his next journey outside of the College. He is pictured here with two of his grandsons. College NewsSwanies superstars!
