Partner Spotlight: Welltec

High efficiency P&A

Welltec® provides safe, fast, efficient methods for decommissioning a well, including both the preparation phase and the subsequent removal of hardware, establishing new and permanent barriers for a successful plug and abandonment (P&A).

High levels of operational efficiency are achieved via advanced service combinations, delivering significant time savings throughout the P&A process.

Key technologies

Welltec® Puncher

Provides an efficient, e-line conveyed, non-explosive method for equalizing pressures between tubular strings. Its innovative design quickly creates a controlled diameter hole in the tubular at the target depth for pipe recovery or completion removal without the use of explosives.

Well Cutter®

Efficient, safe drill pipe, liner, tubing, and casing recovery operations without the need for explosives. The Well Cutter uses a rotating head to remove pipe incrementally, which prevents the creation of shavings.

Axter Retrieve AxterRetrieve

The Axter in RETRIEVE mode is set to locate microtube(s) externally on the tubing string, get annular access to, and finally retrieve the microtube(s) over a certain length to enable displacing cement into the tubing/production casing annulus. All with the intention of creating a cross-sectional barrier without any conduits/leak paths through the plug.

Safe and controlled

Based on rigless e-line conveyance, Welltec also offers milling solutions for access to lower parts of the well. The incremental cutting of pipe and establishing controlled flow path between tubing and casing is achieved via non-explosive methods. Injection of fluids, and setting permanent plugs and barriers is all carried out in an efficient, controlled and documented operational sequence.

BENEFITS INCLUDE

  • E-line based pipe cutting in all sizes
  • Establishing flow paths up to 25 mm in diameter
  • Setting permanent plugs
  • All tools combinable
  • Safe, fast intervention
  • Considerable well preparation before rig arrives

CODA turns 3!

December 10, 2024 marked a significant milestone for CODA, as we celebrate three years of independently serving as Australia’s peak body for decommissioning.

Over this period, CODA has grown to become a 130+ partner organisation, uniting industry stakeholders from across the entire supply chain. Together, we’ve worked to address key challenges, develop innovative solutions, and promote best practices in decommissioning.

"Reaching our third anniversary is a proud moment for CODA. It reflects not only the strength of our partnerships but also the dedication and collaborative spirit of everyone involved in shaping the future of decommissioning in Australia. The work we’ve achieved together—delivering key studies, building industry resources, and fostering collaboration—has set a solid foundation for continued progress. I want to thank all our partners and the Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation department of the WA Government for their invaluable support. Here’s to many more milestones ahead.”

– Francis Norman, CEO, CODA

Australian Decommissioning Waste Facilities Database now live

Our Waste Facilities Database is an interactive online platform providing a detailed overview of waste management facilities across Australia. It enables users to explore facilities' locations, capabilities, and licenses, specifically focusing on those that can process decommissioning waste streams, such as hydrocarbons, mercury, NORMS, and PFAS-contaminated materials.

The database consolidates data from public domain sources and surveys of waste facilities, making it the most comprehensive resource for the Australian decommissioning sector.

Australia’s Offshore Resources Decommissioning Roadmap released

Australia’s decommissioning sector has reached a pivotal moment with the release of the Offshore Resources Decommissioning Roadmap by the Albanese Government. This initiative outlines a $60 billion pipeline of opportunities for the responsible management of offshore infrastructure over the coming decades, providing a strong foundation for collaboration across the supply chain.

CODA CEO Francis Norman highlighted the significance of this milestone:

"The roadmap and its associated studies and reports will help to set expectations between parties as Australia’s decommissioning workload increases over the next ten years. It also recognises that engagement between federal, state, and territory governments is essential for achieving streamlined and effective planning"

AU UK partnership agreement

Australia and the United Kingdom have signed a partnership agreement to strengthen cooperation on offshore oil and gas decommissioning, signalling a significant opportunity to exchange knowledge, share technologies, and build stronger supply chains across both regions.

CODA looks forward to working with industry and government to support this shared vision.

The agreement was signed by the Australian Department of Industry, Science and Resources Minister for Resources and Minister for Northern Australia, Madeleine King, and the UK Department for Business and Trade Minister for Services, Small Businesses and Exports, Gareth Thomas MP.

Xplore challenge winner

A big congratulations to GOWell, the winners of our second Xplore challenge, which focused on solutions for the remote detection of hydrocarbons below environmental plugs in temporarily abandoned wells, with the aim of improving the safety and cost-effectiveness of final well abandonment.

After thorough consideration, GOWell’s acoustic pulse tool concept was selected as the top solution, demonstrating great potential to deliver critical information on the presence or absence of fluid build-up below cement plugs and has a viable pathway to prototype and commercial development.

CODA and the challenge owner would like to thank everyone who submitted their innovative ideas and engaged with the process.
