Tuesday Edition
Good morning members, and welcome to another wonderful Tuesday morning! We hope you’re all feeling bright-eyed and bushy-tailed because we have a lot of great stuff in store for you today. So, without further ado, let’s jump right in!
First things first, let’s give you the answer to yesterday’s riddle!
Break it and it gets better, set it and it‘s harder to break. What is it?
Did you get it? The answer is record! Why? Because you 'break' a record when you do something better than it has been done before, and if you set a new record, it's usually pretty hard to break! Now that's a tricky one, eh? But a fair few of you came through with the correct answer! If you got this one right, then scroll down to the bottom of this newsletter, where you will find a shoutout just for you!
Now then, what's happening in Australia and around the world today?
-
Pensioners may be the solution to job vacancies, but the penalty they have to pay is unfair.

-
And finally, a mum has been called a 'monster' for putting her baby through a 'painful' procedure. But here's why she did it.
That's all for today's news, folks! But we've got plenty more in store for you, including a classic joke from member @Johno1 and a stunning photo of the day from @dragabagalong1. Also, we're having a bit of a discussion here at the SDC HQ about pension rules for seniors who are considering returning to work to help with the labour shortage in the country. What are your thoughts on this? Would you consider returning to work if your pension wasn't impacted? Share your thoughts in our thread here.
Also, don’t forget to check out today's OzWord, our Sudoku puzzles, and our Let’s write a limerick game for some fun brain training.
And here's the moment you've all been waiting for, it's time to announce the winner of our 'Nostalgia Competition’! We've received so many wonderful entries that it was hard to choose just one. But there can only be one winner; this time, it goes to member @Balwyngirl! Congratulations! You've won a $100 gift voucher to Coles, Woolies, Aldi or IGA! We'll be in touch shortly to arrange delivery.
We've decided to feature her entry in our Yesterday's Australia segment below, so be sure to check it out! Thank you so much to everyone who took the time to share their most cherished memories of yesterday's Australia. Your stories really took us down memory lane. What a wonderful bunch of members we have here at the SDC! If you didn't win this time, don't worry, we'll have another competition for you soon, so stay tuned!
As always, members, stay safe and happy reading!

Here's member @Balwyngirl's winning entry for the 'Nostalgia Competition': 'Christmas was my favourite time of the year for sure! About 2 weeks before Christmas, my dad’s garage was out of bounds to myself and 4 older siblings. This was because it became “Santa’s workshop!” For those 2 weeks, dad would re- paint and repair old bikes, dolls prams etc so that we felt like we were getting new ones for Christmas. Mum was also busy sewing dolls dresses and also pillows and covers for the prams. Christmas morning was just magical! We didn’t need brand-new toys etc from a shop. Our presents were made and given with love.'
This is such a lovely memory! It is so touching that your parents went to such lengths to make your childhood Christmas so memorable!. We think the idea of reusing and upcycling old toys and being grateful for what we have has mostly been forgotten in today’s society. This entry is a great reminder of the simple joys in life and how much love goes into making cherished memories. Thank you so much for sharing this memory with us, @Balwyngirl!

The Windmills of Kinderdijk
How stunning is this shot of the windmills of Kinderdijk by member @dragabagalong? They posted this photo in our photography forum along with the caption, ‘The windmills of Kinderdijk in the Netherlands. There are 19 in total and date back to 1794. It's a world heritage site and a long ride out of Amsterdam, by train and bus, but worth the trip.’ Wow! It’s hard to believe that these windmills are over 300
years old, standing tall and proud! Thank you for sharing this photo with us, @dragabagalong!

A frog goes into a bank and approaches the teller. He can see from her nameplate that her name is Patty Whack.
‘Miss Whack, I'd like to get a $30,000 loan to take a holiday.’
Patty looks at the frog in disbelief and asks his name. The frog says his name is Kermit Jagger, his dad is Mick Jagger, and that it's okay, he knows the bank manager.
This joke never gets old! A big thank you to member @Johno1 for sharing this one. Check out the rest of the joke here.
