Sunday Edition
Good morning, members! Happy Sunday! I (Jarred) know it doesn’t have quite the same ring to it as ‘Happy Friday’ because we all know what day comes next… But still, I highly doubt that weekends would be so enticing if it weren’t for the sad day that is Monday. 😉 Think of how a nice, cold glass of water seems like the most refreshing thing in the world on hot days. But some people love sunny days, and I’ve yet to meet anyone who loves Mondays. Can you tell I’m not a big fan? Well, if you have any advice on how to cope with the Monday
blues, be sure to tell us here!
And now, onto our lovely Sunday tradition — the quote of the week. This one is something I’m sure will pierce everyone’s hearts (I pray not literally) from member @chubbybon:
‘Language comes in many forms, but laughter is universal.’
I firmly believe this to be true. In the case of meeting someone for the first time, I’ve found that getting them to laugh satisfies me as much as it allows me to glimpse what makes them tick. What humour do they like? Dark? Slapstick? Observational? The walls they have around strangers seem to crumble bit by bit with every smile on their face, and it’s a kind of destruction that I can get behind (I swear all your physical walls are 100 per cent safe from me). I’d also like to take the opportunity to give a shout-out to our tireless jokesters in our Jokes, Fun & Games forum, there are too many of you to name, but you know who you are! Thank you for always sharing jokes to cheer us up every day — especially on Mondays!
And on the topic of things to smile about, I’d like to remind you to enter our latest competition! All you have to do is refer your friends to the SDC for your chance to win a $100 voucher to Coles, Woolworths, ALDI or IGA! To refer a friend to us, all you have to do is email their name and email address here! You can also email us at contact@seniorsdiscountclub.com.au. Please note: You cannot email your friends' names and email addresses without their permission. If you do so, your entry to the competition will be removed.
And then, there’s also our Australia-wide Senior Discount Directory, which has all discounts offered to seniors nationwide at your fingertips. Just type in your suburb name or postcode and preferred category (i.e. food, travel), and search away to your heart’s delight. Enjoy!
Now, let’s look at what happened across Australia and around the world this week, shall we?
-
YOUR SAY SUNDAY: Given recent developments such as the interest rate hike and a pension indexation some feel is inadequate amid a cost-of-living crisis, we want to hear from YOU. Should Australia increase taxes on the wealthy to address income inequality?
-
We received news this week that Centrelink payments for over 4.7 million Australians are up for an increase. Have a look at the full list of pension and allowance increases here. Are you happy with the increase?
-
Coles, Woolworths, ALDI, and IGA gave us awesome deals, including some cleaning essentials and items like Tintara Mclaren Vale Shiraz for $15 and Chicken Garlic Kyiv for $1.50. You can still get these deals today!
-
RECALL ALERT! Several products were recalled this week over safety concerns, including a popular household appliance that could catch fire, beer with a dangerously high alcohol volume, and a faulty helmet. Do YOU have these products?
-
‘This is great!’: Kmart shoppers were sent into a frenzy when a popular kitchen appliance saw a drastic price drop from $59 to $39. Will you be nabbing one?
-
A senior ALDI shopper ended her grocery run with a bag full of goods and eyes filled with tears over another shopper’s unbelievable act. You're not prepared for this one...
-
‘Food poisoning on sale’? A Woolworths customer pointed out something amiss at one store – but other people weren’t having a bar of it. Was the shopper right to call the retailer out?
-
A $149 cleaning gadget from Kmart that’s ‘just as good’ as a $1000 competitor made waves online - if this isn’t a bargain, we don't know what is! But is it really worth the hype?
-
Which supermarket gets you your money’s worth: Coles, Woolies, or ALDI? Here’s what $50 gets you at each shop. Are you shocked?
-
Get the luxe look on a budget! Shoppers raved about a pair of shorts from BIG W that look exactly like a luxury version worth $240. You won’t
believe how much they’re selling for!
-
Rock it at 18 or 80: This ‘perfect autumn dress’ from Kmart went viral — and it’s just $25!
-
Another ALDI shopper’s kind gesture had people online divided when someone said it was ‘insulting’. Well, was it?
-
In need of a pleasant surprise? Well, fret not because we’ve got you: feast on this delicious recipe sure to get you feeling very peachy.
-
And to cap our Sunday array of stories to keep you company, here’s a joke from member @Skipton about helping a neighbour… And getting an odd reward!

We often hear the term ‘back in the day’ when talking about the past, and this time is no exception. The above photo is the Wednesday, May 21, 1969 edition of the Daily Mirror showing food advertisements for a supermarket. Look at those prices! Lamb chops for less than $2, sausages sold for 25c per pound, and 25c for a 5-pound pack of potatoes. Why, these are enough to bring tears to anyone’s eyes, and probably not because of nostalgia… Do you remember a time when prices were this low? Tell us here!

Got Health insurance? Your Premiums Are Going Up Yet Again*
A health insurance rate rise of 2.90% is what Aussies are being slapped with during a cost-of-living crisis. We’ve seen mortgage rates increase, grocery prices spike, petrol prices peak, and now our health insurance premiums will be increasing by an average of 2.90%.

Geisha Girl in My Garden
Today’s image comes from member @Jan A, who shared another snap from her garden — but this time, it’s a surreal image of these vibrant purple flowers displayed in full colour amid a sunny day. The way the purple pops out with the contrasting light and dark green background is somehow hypnotising, for lack of a better term. I spent more time than I’d like to admit just admiring the beauty of this picture, and I hope it instils in you a sense of calming warmth the way it did for me. Thank you so much for this, member @Jan A! See this post and more of our members' amazing contributions on our photography forum!

I asked a supermarket worker where they kept the tinned peaches.
He said, ‘I’ll see,’ and walked away…
Ah! What a joke for a Sunday. Not too long, but certainly not too short. I hope all of you find this one as funny as I did, but I’ll see. Haha! Read on for the rest of this gem from member @mick.idgaf!

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is the 7th and final instalment in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. It was released in July 2007 and adapted into a two-part movie in 2010 and 2011. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince are the first and sixth novels in the series, respectively. Harry Potter and the Woolworths Aisle Mystery, sadly, is just a thing we made up.
