NEWS UPDATE13 January 2023 Publishers noteBy my calculation, Michelle is today on day 159 into her journey. When she called earlier this week, I can’t say that she seemed as bubbly and enthusiastic as she normally is. She knows the end of her journey is close and her mind has shifted to the end rather than the task at hand. Our conversation went for some time longer than normal and I came to the conclusion she was just having a couple of rough days. I know Michelle well, and I have no doubt that she will be a new person by the next call. It was the simple things she would normally get over soon, that were playing on her mind. Michelle was about 9 degrees south of the equator, close to the 10-degree mark. Her distances were not as good as over the previous few days with the rowing not yielding the results she wanted. She had plenty of food, but almost all her favorites were gone. I asked if she had gone overboard to give Australia Maid’s bottom a scrub and she gave me a firm NO. She says she now has too many sharks following her day and night, and her days going overboard were over. I am not sure if that will remain the case, but she was adamant that was the case when we spoke. For the short term, her challenge was going to navigate around or through Vanuatu. Exactly how she wasn’t sure but said that Roger 'Clouds' Badham would guide her and she will do exactly what Clouds tells her to do. In her heart she wants to arrive into Sydney, but we both agreed that as long as she arrived safely, anywhere on the east coast would suffice. A whole lot of logistical problems for her arrival started to niggle her, but I assured her that the ground team here would look after them. For now, Michelle continues to paddle.
