Political Signage Reminders

With the April 1 Election underway, the Village would like to remind residents of what the Village can and cannot regulate regarding political signage on private and public property.

  • Private Property: The Village cannot regulate content of signage on private property due to freedom of speech laws.
  • Public Property: Per the Village Code, signage of any kind (political, commercial, or even just informational) that gets placed on public property is not permitted and will be removed. Public property includes rights of way (parkways, open spaces, street corners, etc.), power/light poles, and/or on physical infrastructure like retaining walls and bus shelters, etc.

Click here for more information on the Village's regulations for the placement of political signs. If your sign is removed, Village staff will make reasonable attempts to preserve the sign and provide owners the opportunity to claim the removed signs. The Village typically holds the signs for 30 days. Please call the Public Works Department at (847) 272-4711 with any questions.

Political Sign Recycling Information:

Don’t let your yard sign wind up in the landfill! Political sign recycling will be available behind Village Hall from April 2 – 7. To recycle, signs must be made of corrugated plastic and the stakes must be removed. Check back next week for drop off locations.

Spring Break Safety Tips

Do you have any Spring Break plans? Before enjoying some time away, make sure your home is safe and secure! Check out the following tips:

  • Lock all windows and doors before you leave the house.
  • Keep your garage door closed and locked.
  • Check the locks on all doors and windows to ensure they’re working properly.
  • Sliding glass doors are extremely vulnerable. Invest in extra security devices for these doors.
  • Do not share your vacation plans on social media.
  • Invest in timers for your indoor and outdoor lights.
  • Store valuables somewhere safe before you leave.
  • Hold deliveries of mail, newspapers, and packages. Contact the post office to put a hold on these items or arrange for a friend or neighbor to bring them in regularly.
  • If going away for an extended period of time, arrange for the landscaping to be completed (mowing the lawn, snow removal, etc.).
  • If you have a home alarm system, use it! Ensure your alarm system is functioning properly and armed.
  • If leaving for more than five days, request a “Residential House Watch” with the Northbrook Police Department. The form is available online here.

Following these simple steps can help keep your mind at ease while enjoying your Spring Break plans!

If you do arrive home to find your residence was burglarized, do not enter the house, avoid touching anything, and immediately dial 911.
