Friday Edition
Good morning folks! And a very happy Friday to you all. It’s been a huge week here at the SDC, and we know you all had a big week too with our national day of mourning yesterday, so we want to take it nice and easy this morning. So first things first, why not go make yourself a cuppa or a nice breakfast before we get stuck into the final riddle of the week? Today’s riddle is thanks to member Dennis R. who has been sending through so many riddles lately! We cannot thank him enough. Of course, if you have any riddles you would like us to run in our newsletter do not hesitate to send them through here.
What can you hear but not see, feel, touch or taste?
This ones a good thought provoking one to start your Friday with, so take your time with it. If you think you know the answer to it, post it on our forum here. If you get the answer correct, you’ll score yourself a shout-out in tomorrow’s newsletter! Not too shabby, eh?
Now, time for my favourite part of the newsletter. The one thing that you’re grateful for today! Today I am grateful for a slower start. It's been nice taking the morning a little easier and having coffee to kickstart the day with Jon and of course his lovely partner, Ellie. What’s the one thing you’re grateful for today? Join me, by posting it on the forum here. Oh and one more thing before we get into today’s news, don’t forget to check out this week’s Coles Best Buys. As always, they have a few goodies that you might want to snap up.
So, what’s happening across Australia and around the world today?
-
We tried the viral Aussie snack: Bakers Delight Finger Buns with Smiths Salt and Vinegar Chips. Here’s our thoughts.
-
An urgent recall has been issued for multiple beers that are sold at BWS and Dan Murphy’s. If you’re a beer drinker, be sure to check these aren’t in your fridge.
-
The famous doughnut makers, Krispy Kreme, have launched three new flavours and my goodness, we think you and the grandkids will love these.
-
A Woolies shopper has been left baffled by this bizarre building detail. Maybe you know why on earth this would be here?
-
Speaking of Woolies, shoppers want to boycott the popular supermarket after the introduction of ‘spy technology’ that treats every self-check-out user as a ‘thief’.
-
A mother was left shocked after ordering 'Vegemite on toast' at a cafe, and instead getting a ‘gross’ homemade version.
-
This is a beautiful story, members: This has to be one of the best landlords ever after leaving an extremely generous care package for their new tenants.
-
Coles is taking a big step and is ‘leading’ the first Australian trial for the sustainable farming of a popular meat product.
-
Karl Stefanovic has struck again by giving some brutal advice to this year's Brownlow Medal winner.
-
An expert has warned against a new ‘sleepy chicken’ cooking trend that has gone viral. ‘It will kill you’.
-
A local fruit shop has left us scratching our heads after a very confusing, and misleading sale sign.
-
Are you on the lookout for a filling meal that also has lots of greens? I think I’ve found the perfect meal, members, and it's this quick spring gnocchi.
-
And finally, should you buy an Aldi Bauhn TV or a soundbar? CHOICE does us all a favour and works out whether cheaper really is better.
And that, members, is a wrap of your Friday morning news! But never fear, the end of the newsletter is not here. Oh no, there’s plenty more in store for you below including a very funny photo of the day thanks to member @Algieboy and some really interesting ‘On this day’ facts, did you know that on this day back in 1994 The Shawshank Redemption was released? What a movie that is! I might give it a watch again tonight!
Don't forget to check out our new ‘petrol widget’ to our website. You can find it on the homepage on the right-hand side, underneath the 'weather widget'. Also have you entered our latest competition? We are calling it ‘the best piece of advice’ competition. We want to hear the best piece of advice you’ve ever received or given, and the person with the best advice will receive a $100 voucher to your choice of Coles, Woolies, ALDI or IGA!
Finally, be sure to check out today's games because we have added a few more! Including Can you name 5? and Be careful what you wish for. As well as our classics
like our Sudoku puzzles, OzGrid and OzWord, and our Keep a Word, Drop a Word. And our card games including Solitaire, Blackjack, and Mahjong. Enjoy!
As always, members, stay safe and happy reading!
PS Did you know millions of eligible Australians are set to receive cash back from their health insurer, while others will be slapped with a 2.70% premium increase? If you’re over the age of 65, you could be paying up to $174 more for the same health cover. Compare and save before October 1.*

Today’s ‘Yesterday’s Australia’ segment is thanks to the lovely member, @Morrihen. They posted a lot of wonderful memories that you can read by clicking here, but here are a few of our personal favourites. ‘Swings and slides, sandpits and monkey bars. No buttons to push or hand held remotes, just bountiful imaginations. Mums and dads cheering home the next olympian as the egg and spoon and the three legged races were fought out ferociously. No Nikes or Reeboks but bare feet dodging the bindis. Those blissful carefree days when the school yard rang with the laughter of Sandmount kids.’
Such wonderful memories. I used to LOVE doing egg and spoon races, my goodness, they were so much fun and everyone always ended up in hysterics!

Seagull challenging my grandson for lunch....
Hahaha! We absolutely loved this photo, it made us laugh. You can see it in the seagull’s eye how much he wants that sandwich. We hope your grandson managed to fend them off, @Algieboy! Thank you so much for capturing and sharing this moment with us all.

A State Trooper was patrolling late at night off the main highway. At nearly midnight, he sees a couple in a car, in lovers' lane, with the interior light brightly glowing.
He carefully approaches the car to get a closer look. Then he sees a young man behind the wheel, reading a computer magazine. He immediately notices a young woman in the rear seat, filing her fingernails…

Sharks do not have bones. Sharks use their gills to filter oxygen from the water. They are a special type of fish known as ‘elasmobranchs’, which translates into fish made of cartilaginous tissues—the clear gristly stuff that your ears and nose tip are made of.
