Resumed flights and remote campsites – this week we’re celebrating authentic cultural experiences and streamlined connections to ‘WA the Dream State’.
Journeying north to the Kimberley, today marks the opening of the seventh Camping with Custodians campsite, at Lombadina. It is the second Camping with Custodians campground to open on the spectacular Dampier Peninsula, which is fast becoming a sought-after destination for out-of-state visitors. The program is one of the key outcomes of Jina: WA Aboriginal Tourism Action Plan 2021-2025, which aims to make WA the nation’s premier destination for Aboriginal Tourism. Aboriginal tourism is also a key goal area outlined in the WA Visitor Economy Strategy 2033. In aviation arrivals, non-stop flights between Johannesburg and Perth resumed this week, with South African Airways returning to Perth for the first time in over four years. Western Australians born in
South Africa make up the fourth-largest migrant group in WA, totaling 49,000 people, and visiting friends and relatives is a key driver for travel to WA. The flights are strategically timed ahead of the Wallabies vs Springboks Rugby Championship match in August, offering South African fans a streamlined connection to see their nation's team live in WA. In a win for regional travel, the Affordable Airfares Program has also launched this week, for its sixth consecutive year making travel within the state more accessible and affordable. The initiative aims to drive visitors to key tourism hubs in regional WA that heavily depend on air access and stimulate economic growth
across the state.
