NEWS UPDATE10 October 2025 Publishers noteOur condolences to the Steber family, their friends, staff, and colleagues who last week lost their patriarch, Bruce Steber. Bruce’s remarkable career spanned nearly eight decades, during which he brought great vision to Australia’s boat-building industry. Through his leadership, Steber International became a respected name synonymous with craftsmanship and innovation, while his mentoring of young apprentices helped shape the next generation of marine professionals who continue his legacy today. This week, attention also turns to the Melbourne Boat Show, which opens next Thursday. Credit is certainly due to the Boating Industry Association of Victoria (BIAV) for its dedicated work in reviving the show post-COVID. Their refined strategy has re-established Melbourne as a key event on the national marine calendar, resonating strongly with both the industry and boating consumers alike. Yesterday’s announcement underlined Victoria’s marine sector as one of the nation’s strongest, with a renewed emphasis on celebrating and promoting the state’s manufacturing excellence. Looking ahead, the inaugural Discover Maritime Innovations Conference on 21 October promises to be another highlight. In the words of the organisers, “the one-day event at the Hyatt Regency Sydney will feature breakthrough announcements in vessel autonomy, electrification, advanced manufacturing, and smart port technologies, positioning the region at the forefront of global maritime sustainability.” These are themes that every business should be paying close attention to, as innovation and sustainability continue to define our industry’s future. If your schedule allows, I encourage you to attend, it’s certain to be both insightful and inspiring.
