Fact of the day
For their mouthwash, Romans used… WHAT?!
The ancient Romans have made several significant contributions to modern civilisation. But not all of their innovations lived to the present day… and we’re glad this particular one didn’t. Up until the 1700s, they used human urine as mouthwash to whiten their teeth. While it seemed repulsive, it was effective as urine contains ammonia which serves as a cleaning agent.
