Leadership for Personalised Care Newsletter

If you don’t see the images in this newsletter, open in browser by clicking on the link at the top.

Welcome to the latest newsletter from the Leadership for Personalised Care team.

The last few months have been really busy for the Leadership for Personalised Care team. We have been delighted to work with so many leaders and potential leaders who share our vision of working collaboratively to drive real change in local systems.

We were delighted that close to 700 people applied for the 210 places on our regional programmes, so we know our work is needed and wanted.  We started the programmes this month and feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. We also ran days 4 and 5 for the current cohort of our national programme. It was great to see everyone again and hear how they have been getting on. Read more below, including details of how to apply for the next cohort.

In this newsletter we’ve included articles from people involved in our work, including an introduction to Kirit – one of our tutors with lived experience; an article from John Evans, one of our programme founders, about the Independent Living Movement; and reflections from Colin Baldwin, one of our previous participants, about his experiences of leadership since attending the programme.  Read on to find out how you can take part in strengthening the way we all connect.

Thank you and see you soon.

Our Work

National programme success

This month the Leadership for Personalised Care Team had the pleasure of delivering the second residential of the national Leadership for Empowered Communities and Personalised Care programme.

“A very valuable 2 days and for me it really started to pull together the need to be an excellent leader through the lens of the often-intangible nature of a complex vast organisation trying to completely change perspective with a focus on communities and personalised care. The content and the speakers were very diverse and valuable; supported by a broad range of pre reading.”

Charlotte Rogers - Long COVID Programme Manager

The sessions were buzzing with excited chatter and re-connection. Together we explored complexity theory and host leadership. Hearing about how people have put their leading into practice and the progress made since we last saw them was awe-inspiring!

"This was my favourite 2 days of the programme so far actually, I found the content super relevant and I could really relate to it, especially the Host Leadership element. Really inspiring and really encouraging me to take control of my own leadership development journey."

Jaqui Gullis - Clinical Lead Therapy Services

If reading about the programme has sparked your interest, we welcome you to consider applying for Cohort 10 of this pioneering programme.

Embedding skills in leadership for personalised care

One of our aims is to ensure that the leadership skills needed for co-production and growing and leading personalised care are embedded into the DNA of lots of other development programmes.

We were therefore delighted to be invited to contribute to the Cheshire and Merseyside Quality Improvement and Leadership Programme over the summer. Rosie Redstone and Catherine Wilton from the Leadership for Personalised Care team co-designed and co-delivered the programme with Dr Joanne Inman and colleagues. Our input went down extremely well with participants, with people reporting they had started to make change and champion personalised care approaches as a direct result of attending.

Our People

Introducing one of our programme tutors, Kirit Mistry

All our programmes are facilitated by a group of experienced, specialist tutors. This month we are delighted to introduce you to Kirit Mistry, who has been a member of the tutor team since April 2022.

Kirit lives in the Midlands UK and has Type 2 diabetes. He brings significant paid and voluntary sector experience to our programmes, as a patient, carer and community activist.

He has a particular passion for ensuring a diversity of voices is heard and improving access to information, awareness and involvement for South Asian communities. He is the chair and founder of the South Asian Health Action charity, and a member of health advisory boards, awareness campaigns and commissioning bodies. These include the National Institute for Health Research Centre for Engagement and Dissemination and the PPI Senate East Midlands Academic Health Science Network.

Putting leadership into practice

In each of our newsletters, we will share with you the story of someone who is applying a person-centred approach in their work. Colin Baldwin, Localities Officer, Public Health, Suffolk County Council, recently talked to us about his experiences of leadership since attending our national in-person programme in year 2018.

Colin told us that for him leadership for personalised care is about supporting and enabling his staff to deliver on their agreed outcomes for their citizens and their communities. He sees his role being to nurture them and provide what they need to blossom.

Since attending the national programme, Colin applies his learning in his day-to-day practice and that of his team. For example, they have introduced an initiative called ‘Chinwags’ which is about going to where their communities are, sharing a cuppa and a natter. Through these opportunities they build relationships with their communities.

Because they have built trust, they can then have open conversations about the services that their citizens want and need. They have also introduced regular 360-degree feedback, asking the community, partners and anyone else who has worked with them about their experiences.

Take part in our Alumni Conference

We are pleased to announce that in March 2023 we will be holding our inaugural Leadership for Personalised Care Alumni Conference. This will be an opportunity to bring together our alumni community to connect, learn together and build a sustainable network of support.

If you have participated in any of our leadership development opportunities, you are a member of our alumni.

We want to know what you would like to see, learn and deliver within this conference. We want you to co-design this conference.

If you have thoughts on what you would like to see included or contributions you would like to make, please get in touch via info@leadershipforpersonalisedcare.org.uk

Calling all allied health professionals

                   Caroline Poole

Giving people choice and control over the way their care is planned and delivered requires systemic change across health and social care. Leaders must unite and work together across boundaries.

The Leadership for Personalised Care network includes people from many different disciplines, all with insight about leadership in their field.

This month we would love to hear from allied health professionals (AHPs) about their leadership journey of embedding personalised care. What has worked best for you in your journey? What do you know now that you wished you’d known when you started out? The new AHP strategy includes a focus on ‘People First’; this is an opportunity for you to get involved in shaping the support you need.

If you’d like to join an informal discussion 1-2pm on Wednesday 19th October, please email Caroline Poole, Professional Head of Allied Health Professions, NHS England at caroline.poole@nhs.net. You can also share thoughts by email.

Our Mission

50th anniversary of the Independent Living movement

John Evans OBE

The Independent Living movement is the origin of what we know as personalised care. We asked John Evans OBE to write about where it came from and what the future we lead should look like.

The life-changing and innovative Independent Living movement was founded in Berkeley California in 1972 by young disabled activists. They felt that as social movements were fighting for their rights so should disabled people. It was time for change. Disabled people were confronted by a society that did not include them. There was no equality.

The Independent Living movement firmly went about changing the course of history to ensure the inclusion of disabled people in the wider society. “Nothing about us without us” became the radical manifesto for the future. It was so successful that this has now become the norm. What was a fringe radical alternative movement is now the accepted policy in many countries and in particular the UK.

The results were far-reaching. Independent Living, along with the social model of disability, transformed the lives of thousands of disabled people more than anything else. It empowered the individual to take control of their own lives and have the options to expand the opportunities and choices which other people took for granted.

We have had many challenges over the years, such as austerity, Covid and the rising cost of living. We need to stand up to these challenges and work together like we did in the past to support each other through this difficult time. This is the importance of peer support, which is one of the basic principles of independent living.

Our future is with co-production. We must work in partnership together equally to ensure that independent living and personalisation continue to prosper. Our expertise is invaluable. Society itself would be the loser if this isn’t the case. Common sense is on our side so that we can maintain our freedom and develop further innovations.
