Life has had its share of ups and downs for Premier Mark McGowan in recent times. He has had COVID-19 and watched his child suffer from the disease. Here’s hoping his family is fully recovered from the disease. The AMA (WA) is all too well aware of the seriousness of the illness and its potential for lasting effects.

 

We face very interesting times as we head into the Federal Election on 21 May. Mountains of iron ore and Labor launching its campaign in WA can’t mask the fact that COVID-19 is an ongoing and serious issue that needs to be monitored vigilantly...

Medical workforce woes
More med school positions not the answer

The Federal AMA has come out strongly against a call by the Group of Eight (Go8) for 1,000 extra Commonwealth-supported medical school places.

Federal AMA President Dr Omar Khorshid was critical of the Go8 report, saying "a return to a boom/bust approach to medical workforce decisions was not the answer."

The Department of Health Clinical Excellence Division is seeking to appoint a talented doctor to this senior leadership role. This is a fixed-term, full-time appointment for up to five years. Part-time will also be considered for the right candidate.

This role ensures the development and achievement of the strategic aims and objectives of the WA health system in clinical and related activities. It will also provide leadership within the Department of Health in respect to system-wide clinical matters and oversee the development and planning of the medical workforce in Australia

Flashback Friday: Time to break impasse in mental health treament

In April 2014, looking at how mental health was treated in the hospital system was firmly on the agenda with an international 'Meeting for Minds' forum planned for May 2014 in Fremantle. The aim of the meeting was to help improve the life expectancy of mental illness sufferers by at least 10 years over the next decade, by forging ambitious and practical new directions in research and treatment.

 

Flash forward to 2022 and mental health is still in the spotlight, but we've come a long way...

Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD) information sessions
May and June

It's been nine months since Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD) became a choice available to eligible Western Australians at the end of life. To discuss this important issue, the Department of Health in conjunction with the WA VAD Statewide Care Navigator Service is holding VAD information sessions via webinar during May and June. This series of online information sessions will cover topics related to VAD in WA. The webinars will provide information for health professionals, consumers and service providers.
