Kaya ,

Hosting the opening Ashes Test in Perth/Boorloo over the weekend was a major win for Western Australia, delivering record-breaking attendance and attracting tens of thousands of visitors to the state.

The West Test drew a crowd of more than 100,000 over the two days—the highest attendance ever recorded for a Test Match at Perth Stadium, surpassing last year’s Test against India.

Close to 20,000 out-of-state ticket holders purchased tickets to witness the Ashes series kick off in Perth for the first time in 43 years, packing out Perth Stadium to enjoy a vibrant celebration of sport.

Adding culture to that vibrancy was Tourism WA’s West Fest—a free festival which was designed to enhance the fan experience surrounding the opening Test as part of our Events Experience Strategy. The festival featured fan zones, live music, gourmet food, and activations such as a Pair’d Pop-up bringing Margaret River Region flavours to the city.

Tourism WA partnered with Barmy Army, Hays Travel and Freedom Destinations to promote The Ashes in the United Kingdom, WA's largest international market by visitor numbers and home to the passionate Barmy Army, drawing thousands of cricket supporters from the UK to experience the Dream State.

In further sporting news, Perth was also announced as the host city for Rugby League World Cup 2026 at the weekend. Adding to the series of massive rugby league events we've hosted here in WA, Perth will host two double-header matches between Australia, England, Wales, Tonga, and France at HBF Park across two weekends in October.

We hope visiting cricket fans enjoyed their time in WA this week and look forward to welcoming rugby fans for another unforgettable experience next year.

Warm regards,

Tourism WA Executive Management Team.
