Revised Policy on Patient and Guest Disruptive Behavior

At Houston Methodist, we pride ourselves on treating everyone as a person of sacred worth and value. This includes our patients, visitors and colleagues. With our I CARE values in mind and with a strong desire to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone at Houston Methodist, we have revised our Patient and Guest Disruptive Behavior guidelines to protect and support you. This is a formal and official way we can emphasize that we will not tolerate disruptive or abusive patients and guests, as well as other staff and volunteers behaving inappropriately. We invite you to attend one of our HMSL town hall sessions, which begin Jan. 31. This year we are offering two virtual sessions. We are excited to discuss continuous improvement in 2023. To sign up, click here and select "My Learning." Then, in the "Find Learning" tab, search for course number 1627067, select "assign to me" and then "register now." You can pick the time and date that works for you. We look forward to seeing you!

Today we remember the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In efforts to encourage community service in honor of Dr. King’s legacy, The Office of Community Benefits is kicking off a system-wide book drive today, Monday, Jan. 16, to help our community tackle youth & adult literacy and promote education among these groups. For our hospital, the drive will support Rainbow Room, which is requesting infant to teen fiction and non-fiction, and Access Health, which is requesting school-aged and also adult fiction or non-fiction in Spanish, English or bilingual books. Donations should be new or gently used. The drive runs through Monday, Jan. 23. Books can be placed in bins around campus. Those locations can be found here.

Book Suggestions Needed

In the coming weeks, HMSL will open a digital library, free of charge for all staff to use. We still need your input on what titles, authors and formats to stock it with. Please fill out this survey by Friday, Jan. 20 to provide your suggestions. More information will be shared about the library soon.

DAISY Award

6W nurse Eric Lagrue, BSN, RN, is the 34th DAISY Award recipient at HMSL. He was nominated by patients who say he is kind, attentive and gives very personal care to patients. You can click here to read his nomination. Congratulations, Eric!

Shining Star Award

The Professional Development Council awarded the Shining Star Award to mammography technologist Heidi Trento Derry. Her colleagues raved about her in nominations, which you can read here. Congratulations, Heidi!

New Quality Director

HMSL is excited to welcome our new Director of Quality, Lavinia Zanaj, DNP, MHA, RN, CPHQ. She started her career at Houston Methodist Baytown Hospital more then 20 years ago and we are glad she has “returned home.” You can read more about her here. Please give her a warm welcome as you see her!

Spotlight: A Bucket List Trip

"We would like to thank the staff of the Oncology & Infusion Services at Houston Methodist Sugar Land. The care my husband received was amazing! We had no idea what to expect when he was first diagnosed with cancer. From the very first day of treatment, the oncology nurses and staff were calming and kind. We were very impressed with their teamwork and the high level of care they showed us. The nurses set our minds at ease and we will always be grateful for their professionalism. We would also like to say what a blessing Joan Burnham has been. She put our minds at ease on so many occasions. We thank each and everyone of you that helped us during my husband's illness!
