NEWS UPDATE18 July 2025 Publishers noteA mixed bag of news this week. A couple of interesting conversations—one with Marine Rescue NSW Commissioner Alex Barrell, and another with Angus McDonald ahead of the Discover Maritime Innovations Conference, coming up in Sydney on 21 October. More than 30 years ago, my wife and I found ourselves in the middle of nowhere, swimming off an island in the Maldives, when we had a whale shark gracefully pass us. This week, we present a fabulous story by Colby Bignell from the CSIRO, who shares some of his findings on these majestic creatures. With very limited knowledge of whether it is true or not, for as long as I can remember, I have been telling two anecdotal stories about how the Italians jinxed their chances in the 1983 America’s Cup in Perth. One story relates to nightclubs and the other to cigarettes being tossed overboard in preparation for them to tack. True or not, they have brought great laughs, so I have continued to tell the story. This week, we bring you a fabulous story about the Azzurra and its history—a great read, sans my anecdotal stories, and worth a look. Also this week, a story from left field, relating to Kongsberg and their move to start production of their HUGIN underwater vehicles in the U.S. This story further demonstrates the pace of technology, with the company offering four models to choose from. While these products lean towards the commercial and military audience, it will be such technology that we will see more often in private and domestic use. I do hope you enjoy this week’s news.
