MARINE BUSINESS NEWS

NEWS UPDATE

 10 January 2025

Publishers note

A shortish newsletter this week with sport, mainly sailing, dominating the news.

Outside of sport, this week we were pleased to hear that Hi-Tide will be returning to the airwaves this weekend.

Industry stalwart Kieran Reekie has been on the air for as long as I can remember, and I’ll declare that over those years he has been more than accommodating in his wishes to help me out whenever I have needed it. I wish Kieran and all the Hi-Tide crew my best for the next chapter of their journey.

One of the things we look for every week at Marine Business News are stories about new technology and how it is being applied to various forms of marine transportation, either commercially or recreational. The idea is that they help us imagine what the future may look like for our industry, and equally what learnings we can take into the future.

Most of these stories are typically consumed with an element of intrigue, and occasionally they are read with a question mark not knowing if what I am reading is even possible. This week comes a story that falls into this category. An organisation called “Goltens” has recently hosted a keel-laying ceremony for an Arctic Cruise Vessel. It's an intriguing read, and it will be even more fascinating to see more when 'Captain Arctic' is launched.

The arrival of a new year gives us cause to look back and forward..

Last year was certainly a biggy for us here at Fishotopia. After an incredible amount of hard work (all of it unpaid, I might add), Jo’s mission to turn the Women’s Recreational Fishing League (WRFL) into a respected national body for empowering female anglers really seems to be coming to fruition.

I’ll admit, when I first saw the numbers, I did a double take.

January 2025 has seen the rapid rise of the NSW Women in Recreational Fishing group on Facebook. In this issue, I seek to reveal what insights its meteoric growth tells us about the topic I ceaselessly bang on about (no apologies) — expanding women’s fishing in Australia.
