Thursday Edition
G'day and good morning! It's been a little while since I (Jonathan) said hello, so I thought I'd just check in to let you all know that I'm still alive and kicking. My partner and I have been laid up since last week with another dose of COVID. The last time I had it was well over a year ago, and with all my vaccinations and boosters, I (apparently very naively) thought I was pretty protected. It's been downright miserable, so dear members, take this as a reminder to stay vigilant. By the way, how many times have you had covid so far, or have you been one of the lucky few to avoid it entirely? Answer our poll here and let us know!
Anyway, my other big news is that I'm recently back from a little trip to Western Australia. Well, I say WA, but actually, we only had a chance to go to Perth, Busselton, and a bit of the Margaret River region. It wasn't my first trip to the lovely Perth (in fact, my mum grew up there), but I'd never seen Busselton or Marg before. What a stunning little area - if you've never been, I highly recommend it, particularly if you're partial to a drop or two of wine! And if anyone from the WA tourism board is reading, I'd just like to let you know that we're absolutely NOT above bribery here at the SDC (far from it), so feel free to send some trips our way so we can write about them. 😉
Okay, last thing from me before we get to the ‘day's going ons’. I'm currently rewatching the first two seasons of Happy Valley in anticipation of getting stuck into season 3. If you like a good British crime drama, it's an absolute must-watch. Speaking of which, what are you watching at the moment? Tell us here.
Right, that's enough from me. First things first, it's time to give you all the answer to yesterday's tricky riddle. For those of you who don't remember, the riddle goes:
Name an eight-letter word that has kst in the middle, in the beginning, and at the end. What is it?
Well, if you guessed 'inkstand', you were correct! Wow! As expected, many of you got the answer correct, and you know what that means, right, folks? You get a shout-out! So stick around, and you’ll find a shout-out waiting for you at the end of the newsletter.
Next on the agenda for today, it’s time to share with you a Fascinating Fact!
Who here loves orchids? Did you know the name orchid has a bit of a naughty origin? The name actually comes from the Greek word orchis, meaning ‘testicle’ because the shape of the root tubers in some species look...a bit, you know... It’s not the most ‘G’ rated fact, but it sure is an interesting one!
Now then, members, what’s happening in Australia and around the world in the news today?

And that's a wrap of your Thursday news! But don’t go anywhere just yet, as there is still lots more to come, including a funny joke from one of our resident comedian’s member @Luckyus, a lovely 'Picture of the day' from member @TessM, and a fond memory in our 'Yesterday’s Australia' segment.
Is there any chance you have had a go at comparing your health insurance? I highly recommend you do so before April 1 when rates are rising a whopping 2.90%*. But don’t worry; I have good news: You don’t need to be paying hundreds more for the health cover you have. Over the past 4 years, our partners at Compare Club have saved their customers who are over the age of 50 an average of $259.50 on their health insurance*.
Of course, this wouldn’t be a wrap-up without our brain-teasing games. So, don’t forget to check out our Alphabetical Bands/Groups Game, Alphabetical Australian Places
Game, Change A Letter Game, and 3x3 Word Thread. Of course, we still have our beloved classic games, including Word Pairs, Abbreviation Game, Word Association Game, Rearrange, Add or Subtract Word Game! Keep a Word, Drop a Word Game, and Can you name 5? As well as our Sudoku puzzles, OzGrid, classic OzWord, and Ozword (expert edition). And our card games, including Solitaire and Blackjack.
And one last thing, don't forget to enter our referral competition! All you have to do is refer your friends to the SDC (with their permission, of course) for one entry into the competition. The more entries you get into the competition, the more chances you have to win a $100 voucher to Coles, Woolworths, ALDI or IGA! To refer a friend to us, all you have to do is email us their name and email address here! You can also email us at contact@seniorsdiscountclub.com.au. your entry to the competition will be removed.
As always, members, stay safe and happy reading!

Ah, the good old rotary phones. Nothing quite beats the nostalgia of hearing the old rotary dial and the sound of the receiver being slammed down! Back then, getting permission to use the phone was a must, and Sunday nights were the best time to call long distances as it was cheaper. Kids these days will never know the joy of using an old-fashioned phone! Do you have any fond memories of your old rotary phone?

Got Health insurance? Your Premiums Are Going Up Yet Again*
A health insurance rate rise of 2.90% is what Aussies are being slapped with during a cost-of-living crisis. We’ve seen mortgage rates increase, grocery prices spike, petrol prices peak, and now our health insurance premiums will be increasing by an average of 2.90%.

Three women die and go to heaven.
When they arrive, St Peter says, ‘We only have one rule here in heaven: Do not step on the ducks!’
So they enter heaven, and there are ducks all over the place.
Oh my goodness! Member @Luckyus is back and bringing the laughs once again with another hilarious joke! I love how it starts with a seemingly simple rule and turns into a hilarious chain of events. Make sure you read the rest of the joke here.
