NEWS UPDATE

21 March 2025

Publishers note

It appears that our industry has survived Cyclone Alfred relatively unscathed. No doubt, awareness and preparation played a significant role in achieving that. Weather can affect us all, in every part of the country, at any time of the year.

We know that boating occurs year-round. While the period from the October long weekend to the Easter celebrations is considered the boating season, the rest of the year can still be active—especially the further north you travel.

In NSW, Marine Rescue Commissioner Alex Barrell is urging boaters not to become complacent, as engine, battery, and fuel issues accounted for 67 percent of responses in February. I don’t know why, but I read the stats and am astounded by the volume of work these volunteers do.

Marine Rescue NSW volunteers across the state completed 415 search and rescue missions last month, including 114 emergency responses, safely returning 936 people to shore. Additionally, Marine Rescue NSW radio operators managed 19,013 radio calls and monitored more than 22,500 logged-on vessels.

Our unreserved gratitude goes to all our marine rescue volunteers across the entire country.

I do hope you enjoy this week’s news.
