Vol 1, Issue 1 (Summer 2023) - Welcome to INTREPID Lab, from our lead Dr. Peter Selby

Welcome to our inaugural INTREPID Lab newsletter! We are so excited to launch and share all the different activities that keep us busy! From our Smoking Treatment for Ontario Patients (STOP) Program’s expansion, to the latest trainings through our TEACH Project, to our newest publications, our goal with this newsletter is to bring you the latest and greatest in our learning health system. It’s also a way to celebrate the team we have here; we are proud of the culture we’ve built at INTREPID which continually strives for equity and inclusion in every way.

You may have seen that we’ve gone through a name change recently. INTREPID Lab combines everything that was formerly under the banner of Nicotine Dependence Service, and reflects our coordinated focus in Innovations, Nicotine and Tobacco, Research, Education, Programming, Implementation and Digital Health. In response to growing community needs and increased capacity, we are expanding and applying interdisciplinary approaches towards tobacco and vaping cessation, chronic disease prevention and management, and behaviour change strategies.

We're so proud to showcase the work we do and the incredible team behind it. In this issue, take a look at our latest news and projects, publications, learn about our STOP program and its virtual offering STOP on the Net, browse through our current educational offerings for practitioners, and more. Want to stay connected and get the latest at INTREPID in your inbox? Click here to subscribe to our bi-annual newsletter!

INTREPID Publications and Research

Check out our latest publications here:

  • Kundu A, Kouzoukas E, Zawertailo L, Fougere C, Dragonetti R, Selby P, Schwartz R. Scoping review of guidance on cessation interventions for electronic cigarettes and dual electronic and combustible cigarettes use. CMAJ Open. 2023;11(2):E336-44. https://doi.org/10.9778/cmajo.20210325

A review of the current evidence and recommendations for  cessation interventions for e-cigarette users and dual users. We found that the current evidence on vaping cessation interventions is limited and no study was found on complete cessation of cigarettes and e-cigarettes for dual users. Rigorous clinical trials are needed to evaluate the effectiveness of behavioural interventions and medications for e-cigarette and dual use cessation among different subpopulations.

  • Racey M, Whitmore C, Alliston P, Cafazzo JA, Crawford A, Castle D, Dragonetti R, Fitzpatrick-Lewis D, Jovkovic M, Melamed OC, Naeem F, Senior P, Strudwick G, Ramdass S, Vien V, Selby P, Sherifali D. Technology-supported integrated care innovations to support diabetes and mental health care: scoping review. JMIR Diabetes 2023;8:e44652. https://doi.org/10.2196/44652

The purpose of this scoping review was to (1) describe the literature on technology-enabled integrated interventions for diabetes and mental health; (2) apply frameworks from the Mental Health Commission of Canada and World Health Organization to elucidate the components, type, processes, and users of technology-enabled integrated interventions for diabetes and mental health; and (3) map the level of integration of interventions for diabetes and mental health. Findings suggest that there is a growing body of literature on integrated care for diabetes and mental health enabled by technology, but gaps still exist with how to best equip health care professionals with the knowledge and skills to offer integrated care.

  • Veldhuizen S, Behal A, Zawertailo L, Selby P. Adequacy of nicotine replacement and success quitting tobacco in clinical populations: An observational study. Drug and Alcohol Dependence. 2023;244:109796.

In this study, we examined the relationship between cigarettes smoked and nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) prescribed, as well as the adequacy of nicotine replacement for cessation success. Analyzing data from 84,667 patients in the Smoking Treatment for Ontario Patients (STOP) program, we found that the prescribed NRT doses did not increase proportionately with cigarettes per day. Furthermore, for patients who continued to smoke daily, doses did not increase at subsequent visits. Dose-response curves derived from our model revealed that initial doses below approximately 2 mg/cigarette/day were associated with poorer outcomes. These findings indicate that under-dosing of NRT, both at treatment initiation and subsequent visit, likely contribute to the poorer treatment outcomes seen among people who smoke heavily.
