Showcasing Kaiapoi High School's building courseLast year, Kaiapoi High School kindly hosted one of our moderation cluster meetings, and while we were there, we had the opportunity to see some of the fantastic projects from their building course SpotlightsWith the year wrapping up, we thought it would be a good time to have some spotlights on work from providers as well as work from a member of staff that are good examples for BCATS levels One, Two and Three. Decking ready for SummerA member of our team recently completed the construction of a deck. This is a good example for a BCATS project for unit standard 12935 Construct a spaced residential timber deck up to one metre high as a BCATS project. Hinged for harvestA couple of our specialists visited Land Based Training in Hastings and were impressed by this creative idea for US12932 - Garden furniture. A portable/raised garden bed, with hinged and netted top to stop pests. Waihanga Ara Rau careers pathwaysWe are currently seeking case studies, initiatives, and success stories (no matter how big or small – it all makes a difference!) from your school or community that assist ākonga in transitioning into the construction and infrastructure workforce. Your examples do not have to identify ākonga themselves. If you have any you would like to discuss, please click on the link below and insert your details, and we will be in touch or email Kelley Marra, Senior Pathways Advisor. Careers pathways in construction and infrastructureAs part of our growing engagement with schools and ākonga, we have developed a newsletter for careers practitioners showcasing quality careers information for schools and the wider careers network The newsletter is designed to provide detailed information to career advisors on recent news, events and opportunities for ākonga to enter the construction and infrastructure industry. Watch this space as there is more to come as we continue the development of an information sheet and poster option. We hope you find this useful and ask that you pass this on to your school’s career advisor or any other contacts who might find this useful to share with ākonga. Please email Kelley Marra, Senior Pathways Advisor, with any feedback or ideas you have for the next edition. Revised consent and moderation requirementsOur revised CMR has been submitted to NZQA. It comes into effect once registered on the NZQCF. We’ll notify you when. The revised CMR reflects feedback from the consultation period – essential in ensuring CMR remains fit for purpose and our industries’ needs continue to be met. Of particular interest will be the requirements for teachers, assessors and moderators, which have been clarified. Other than that, there are not too many significant changes for schools. Thank you to all those who engaged. Introducing Ryan EgoKia ora koutou. Having worked in Aotearoa the past seven years as a football coach, coach educator, university lecturer, and a first aid training team leader, I am excited to bring my wheako whaiaro and passion for education to Waihanga Ara Rau. Before moving to Aotearoa, during my previous career in the fire services, I was fortunate enough to work on three different continents in many different roles. Working as a front-line officer, inspector, and trainer gave me an introduction to quality assurance, moderations and assessments. In my last role with the Red Cross, leading a team that delivered emergency medical response training to Fire & Emergency New Zealand, I honed my moderation and assessment skills within the NZQACF. I am looking forward to contributing to the future of Aotearoa’s growing construction and infrastructure sector through my work with Waihanga Ara Rau. In my personal time, I am an avid animal lover, sports fan and proud husband. Having recently become a New Zealand citizen, I also like to travel and experience Aotearoa whenever the missus and I get the chance. Lastly, working in an inclusive and diverse organisation such as Ohu Ahumahi, I feel fortunate to be able to say, “Kei te ako ahau i te reo i taku mahi hou”. BCATS review progressReview of the BCATS qualifications and development of new skill standards for BCATS is progressing well. All new skill standards will include achieved/merit/excellence grades to differentiate a student’s level of performance and achievement. This will enable the standards to contribute to NCEA merit and excellence endorsement at certificate level. Details of changes, proposed provider support, and the draft skill standards are available on our website. We want to take this opportunity to thank the many people who have contributed their time and expertise to this mahi. Get in touchAs always, the Waihanga Ara Rau Assurance Team is here to support you – regardless of whether you have already attended your cluster workshop.
