Issue 805 Thursday, 16 May, 2024
Thank you for the warm welcome I have received in my first week as Acting Managing Director. It is an honour to be at the helm of an organisation that is so dedicated to the continued success of our state’s tourism industry. As we transition into this new chapter, I am thrilled to build upon the momentum generated and many milestones achieved by Carolyn Turnbull and the Tourism WA Dream Team – including in the major events space. I am pleased to share that the Tourism WA-supported triple world title boxing event on Sunday was a resounding
success, with RAC Arena reporting the largest sporting crowd in its history for the sold-out boxing showcase. This Australian-exclusive attracted thousands of out-of-state visitors and elevated Perth on a global stage, with the event broadcast in over 100 countries and territories, reinforcing WA’s reputation as a world-class sports and events destination. Also on the sporting front, Football Australia announced last night that Western Australia has been selected as one of three Australian host states for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Women’s Asian Cup 2026, which is expected to be watched by over 100 million viewers worldwide. Our
ongoing success in attracting world-class sporting events brings us closer to delivering on Tourism WA's Vision for Dream Events, to establish our state as the fastest-growing events destination in the South East Asian region. As we move forward, I look forward to continuing to work together across all facets of the WA tourism industry, to realise our shared vision for a sustainable, inclusive, collaborative and innovative WA visitor economy.
Warm regards,
Steph Underwood
Acting Managing Director
